Help - totally lost

OK, think I have found one I am going to get. Been a long time viewer, HSE with 90k ish on the clock - SH in place too. What should I look for on the service book though. Cambelt (around 70k I believe) but anything else ? notice a few have reference to suspension or gearbox torque but are these necessary and recommended to change or are they through faults etc ?

Bit lost to be honest so any help would be great

(PS - apologies if in wrong section)

Cam belt is 105k miles, or 7 years. You don't say what year the car is?

So it should have had a cam belt in 2012 at the latest. Almost due another one!

Run the registration number through this -

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

to check past history, gives a good indication of how its been looked after.
Personally I hate seeing loads of advisories not being attended to and just the bare minimum carried out to pass after a fail

Hi,

As Rrhool said earlier, the cam belt is every 105,000 miles or every 7 years.

So, it should have been done in 2012 irrespective of mileage, and will be due again next year.

If it has not been done, either insist on it getting done and make sure it has a warranty, and seems the perceived wisdom is to get them to change to oil pump case as well as it has a tendency to crack after a belt change, which wrecks the engine. If they do change the belts, make sure you evidence it, and they use proper LR parts, again seems to be the perceived wisdom.

Mine is the same age and I’ve had it for 5 months now.

Main issues I’ve had are ....

Check it has had recall work done to brake oil lines and steering wheel clock spring (P017 and Q045)

Check footwell carpets are damp. If so may need the external A pillar fixings upgraded or the sunroof drain hose elbows replaced. The drains particularly are a Censored to do on passanger side so would get them to do it before you take it unless it’s been done.

Also check in cabin air filter chamber (behind glove box) to see if there is signs of damp. If so, the scuttleboard weather seal, The plastic panel at the bottom of the windscreen, may need replacing.

Particularity of passanger carpet damp, it can lead to water gathering around the wiring looms or about the cabin fuse box causing corrosion and electrical faults. Particularly, make sure the central locking works ok!

Check the steering wheel audio controls and cruise control work properly. If not, again the clockspring may need looking at.

Air suspension; play around with it and make sure there are no error messages and that the car goes up or down, as you want, without any warning messages. The original firmware for these allowed the compressor to overheat, resulting in failure. Also, air suspension bags and lines and reservoir can all develope leaks.

Turbo: the early firmware lacked the exerciser program to work the turbo and EGR valves. This means the turbo actuator arm can stick resulting in the car going into limp mode when under load or pushed for power. Take it for a test drive and make sure you floor the accelerator (somewhere safe) to ensure it accelerates smoothly without going into limp mode.

Also, watch for black smoke when accelerating hard as may indicate issues with EGR valves.

Electronic parking brake: can be prone to failure if not serviced regularly. Should come on and off smoothly. Any screeeching noise and it needs looking at.

Transmission: there is an issue with a noticible thump when pulling away after having slowed to a slow roll but without stopping. Called the California stop I think. If present, may benefit from a transmission software update.

As far as software updates go, it’s worth asking if they can check it has the latest firmwares for the various bits, or asking if they can get it to an LR dealer to have it updated.

May take a bit of negotiating as LR only seem to want to do it AFTER something has failed.

Ideally, if you know anyone with an IID diagnostic tool, get them to read the stored codes to look for the issues I’ve mentioned.

Is that enough to start with?

wow - thanks for the response. That's great.

I really am not mechanically minded so this is all super helpful. As an aside you know anyone in the Yorkshire area that could give the car a once over for me ?

Great site - THANKS all.

I’m not mechanically minded either.

This is just stuff I’ve picked up in the last 5 months, so could all be wrong.

But with what I have learned, that’s what I’d be looking for, though there is doubtless other stuff that ought to be checked.

I don’t know anyone Yorkshire way, but might be worth checking the ”sponsors” section for someone local to you, and take the car to them for a proper inspection.

Good luck

Andy

Oh, and. I forgot this one

https://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...b00245.pdf

Check the front diff breather hose. The old style cap was prone to blocking, causing the oil seals in the front diff to fail. LR recommend replacing with a new breather cap as per the pdf linked above.

1010 - Welcome.

Are you proposing to buy from a dealer?

Is the service history Full JLR dealers, or does it include independents?

How will you pay. Highly recommended to pay at least the deposit on a credit card:-

Keep us posted & good luck.

Hi 1010

As well as service history , I.e stamps in the book , try for a stack of receipts
Etc for work that has been done , this will give you a better idea of how the car
Has been looked after in the past .
This was sound advice that a forum member recently gave to me when I was
Looking to buy , hope it goes well for you

Don’t know if this was mentioned but brake flexi hoses to be replaced every 6 years so check their condition!
