Highways Agency.......... |

Are HA patrol cars allowed to park up in the "Police Vehicles Only" bays on the hard shoulder of motorways?
I ask this as there was a HA Mistubishi parked in a Police bay on the M6 Northbound just before Sandbach Services at 1900hrs yesterday evening.
The reason I noticed it was that its presence caused a a lot of confusion on the already busy motorway. Many drivers presumed it was a police car, and slammed the brakes on causing several vehicles to brake hard, and many drivers to change lanes recklessly.
The point is, when the motorway is busy, and near capacity, is it a good idea to place such a vehicle in such a position as to possibly cause an accident?

I understand where you are coming from, but surely that says more about the standard of road users driving in the first place rather than any HA/police vehicle they might see. A car not parked in lane 1, 2 or 3 or the hard shoulder of the motorway should never nearly cause an accident on a motorway if proper concentration and roadcraft are maintained

I see HA in these spots all the time. Also see them parked up on the bridges which often come under motorway regulations.
Personally I don't have an issue with it, TBH if you have to brake and then realise it's the HA rather than the rozzers, at least you know you've not been nicked!
I also see quite a few paramedic volvos on bridges and this often causes people to brake as well, but it's the people driving who are at fault not the presence of the vehicle. I'm sure we all brake when we see a police car parked up or speed camera it's a natural reaction, but it doesn't mean that the presence of the police, HA etc. is to blame. D3 HSE MY05 Auto

I must say 's here we go again.
YES we can park on the Police points (actually its HA land)
The MW is busy and and near capacity .... thats where we need to be.
whether it was us or the Police or VOSA or anyone else Im sorry but if Mr Numpty is not/cant drive his car correctly , then maybe he should get a bus pass. Its all about Roadcraft (or lack of) which Im afraid to say can be very poor these days.
Most of the accidents Ive been to appear to be down to poor judgement, driving to close, changing lanes without looking, tiredness, distraction within the car.
Would you rather see us sit in a Supermarket carpark??? probably not.
Ken your info is 100% wrong.
SJR - Thank you
Stu - Thanks
Gareth - its always worth asking
Sorry to rant a bit at the start but hopefully thats cleared up.
PS over time the perches will be changed to "Authorised vehicles only"
What I would like to see is some sort of campaign that tells the public what we can and cant do and why we do what we do do. I been to too many events where the Q is Ive seen you but what do you do?? etc etc

Another pet hate I have is the idiots driving on normal roads who when there way is blocked by a parked car just pull out into the oposing traffics lane regardless of whether there is another car approaching 1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

There are far too many idiots on our roads.
npinks, why should they be 'done' for impersonating a Police officer ? Do these vehicles you see have fake 'POLICE' markings and people sitting inside with fake uniforms on ?
Do they not have Highways Agency, or Ambulance, or Paramedic written on them ?
Next time I see a red lorry I will report it as impersonating a fire engine

Oh if we're all having a moan
Why do mini roundabouts cause people so much difficulty ??
The clue is in the word 'roundabout'.
Maybe everyone should take an IAM course and try and pass the test. Not Class1 but all the same very insightful.

Taken from Highways Agency website
"Traffic Officer vehicles are able to use observation platforms, as are the police and VOSA. Using this part of the highways infrastructure or other strategic locations such as overbridges enables our crews to give a physical presence which enhances public reassurance. More importantly, it allows our patrols to be in the place where they can most likely have a positive effect on dealing with incidents."
Can't see the problem myself, if you and others are confident in your driving standards and are able to stay within speed limits etc then there would be no need to slam on and make hasty lane changes. If you are looking far enough ahead and using your mirrors appropriately then you would already be braking and making directional changes while others are panicking ahead. IMHO. Problem is goodfella, there is a large minority of people that drive with a completely selfish attitude towards all other road users. Like its their 'right' to be allowed to.

I understand that and you just have to account for those numpties as best you can but what is being discussed here is whether its right for HA officer's to use platforms etc and its ridiculous to suggest otherwise. The whole point of the platforms is to observe what is going on around you rather than taking in one carriageway all the time when driving. Badda bing.......How you doin'?

Totally agree Dave. Good to see also that you haven't been labotomised into believing that "speed kills" and not the numpty driving the car.
I have to say though that I doubt that the HA own the land as they are only managing the highways on the tax payers behalf. Believe it or not we own the highways, don't we?
