On holiday and disk pad worn light has come on.
Hi all,
Just come to Lincolnshire on a family holiday and the disc warning light has come on indicating the pads are worn, oddly i thought it may be time to look at these a few weeks ago but...
2009 First generation Discovery 4
Does anyone have any idea how long they may last for after the light comes on or are we already in danger of eating into the discs?
Last time I had to have the pads and discs changed as it was the pad without the warning light that had worn done, surprise!
Unfortunately i have no tools so other options may be:
Go to a local LR dealer (Market Rasen) , not top of my list
Get some pads delivered and get some feedback from people what minimum tools I would need.
Get a recommendation for a local in independent who I can call.
All help/suggestions greatly appreciated.

usually the light comes on some 3 - 4K miles before it gets nasty. It is intended to have you pay attention and change them soon.
I'd take a torch and look around on all 4 wheels to see how much indeed is left.
If you do not feel comfortable have them changed next day. Cost is not too much anyways.Achim

The indicator is pretty crude so you need to look at the pads to judge. If the indicated pad is the worst then you will have plenty for your holiday. As you have noted a different pad could be worse.
Market Rasen are a good bunch and you will get forum discount on the parts from Dan. There is also a very good Indy in Louth (speak to Dave at Famous Four) and the labour is £57 per pair inc vat. Dave is my go-to guru and worthy of your trust.

go to a dealer & gets some pads fitted...
....why risk your safety in braking & the integrity of vehicle...let alone wrecking the discs for a few bob.....by waiting till you get home ?
OK the dealer may have a queue....but if you ask nicely you can usually get to almost the from...
its possible your disks may need to be swapped also...
Personally....I never meddle with brakes & ;eave them to those who have more capability than me (experience & knowledge) its safety part of the car...I realise this differs to the ideas of some on her who want (need or have) to do everything also if I were on holiday I would be wanting to do tasks on my vehicleBREXIT - done properly.

Unless you drive hard tow or are on hilly terrain I would drive on them till home but thats me . I can never decide if its worth fitting a second set of pads to old discs is worth it I find they are either under sized or poor condition half way through the new pads. If the pads go right through you will hear a horrible grinding noise but still retain some braking then its defo time for new pads and discs.D4

Thanks guys, all much appreciated.
Looking at the tool list it may be too much for a quick holiday job so will be calling around tomorrow to get prices and also review the state of the pads today.

Where in Lincs are you staying? Is your disco 2.7 or 3.00ltr?It can when others can't,

We are in Tetford and it is a 3Ltr
Whilst I was looking at the pads (Not easy to do with the wheels on!) i noticed that the brake fluid is also on the minimum though the warning message says 'worn'.

Sure you haven't got a caliper sticking?- the fluid level will be low as it goes down with pad wear, don't top it up until you change the pads unless it is dangerously low and then only put minimum in as the level will go back up with new pads.
I am near Newark and could supply assistance and tools to change them if you are really stuck (about an hours job on your way home?) I have a set of part worn discs and pads but afraid they won't fit your model.
Listen for any grinding noise when you apply the brakes, that's when the pads have totally shot it and its time to stop travelling.
Pads can be obtained locally either genuine Duckworths or Marshall at Lincs, both very good or local motor factor non genuine. It can when others can't,

Hi All,
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and offers of assistance.
Famous Four Louth was only 11 miles from where we were so with no mobile signal I took a drive on spec.
I have to say the guys were fantastic, they made room in the schedule and I had a new set of pads and front discs within a couple of hours of arriving, they even offered to drive me into Louth whilst waiting.
Dave and the team were really friendly and helpful, prices for parts and labour were great value and customer service was faultless.
Thanks to Robbie for that suggestion and to everyone for their offers.
Off to the beach and hope to talk to you on the forum again soon.
