home insurance renewal merry-go-round |
|
Got the renewal for 'bricks and mortar' insurance on home. As expected it's gone up (£18 ) and some things no longer part of policy......... (If I add them back in its gone up by around £42)
Usual two minute trawl on 'gocomparethesupermarket' sites and I get similar cover for around £30-60 cheaper, including my current company at £44 less than the renewal letter.
Ring them up and point out I can get it cheaper, with them, than they have quoted me to renew. They tell me this is for new customers only. I ask if they will price match and they reduce but do not match the online price. Whilst not the absolute cheapest I am happy to stay with them for overall policy conditions, etc.
So I tell them I will not be renewing my policy with them and then go and click the online quote and take that anyway...........

Last year I forgot to renew my House insurance for about 6 months. Got it £40 cheaper when I contacted them and with increased cover, possibly as a new customer?

I've seen myself take out an online policy with the same company who quoted me higher for renewal and wouldn't budge despite pointing this out, so I just went online and got it that way. They don't ask you whom your with or if they do, it makes no difference if it's the same company nine times out of ten.
This year I got my Home Protect Policy renewal £50 more than last year. Did a trawl on the comparison and got Priviledge Platinum cheaper. Phoned up Home Proect and told them. They didn't match or even to keep me, so I cancelled the renewal, only to discover they'd taken the money 2 weeks early, so they had to refund. Now with Priviledge.
Price wise as you know, it depends on postcodes, personnel circumstances etc. so what's cheap for me might not be cheap for anyone else.

I really hate the "oh that's for new customers only" spiel. It's not just insurance, energy and mortgage providers are at it too. Santander would rather lose me as a mortgage customer than offer me the same rate they'll give to new customers. And as for EDF Energy.....
I really don't understand businesses that would rather attract possible new customers instead of retaining their existing ones. Surely it's cheaper to retain than to replace?

Couple of alternative options:
1) Let policy finish for 1 day then you are / should be a new customer (your risk in case anything happens)
2) Check out the Cashback sites i.e Quidco and TopCashBack always some good deals on them

Well they managed to it up still. Old policy confirmed not to renew last week and new policy done online and paid for.
Today I notice that they have taken the money for the 'old' policy three days ahead of when it is due and despite it being cancelled FFS..........
Rang them up and had to wait 37 minutes to get through (at 'up to' 13p/minute apparently) and ask why the they've taken money without any authority from my account. Lots of spiel about it hasn't been taken but it's just been 'applied for' before the renewal date so no lapse in cover (no answer to "what, the policy renewal that has been cancelled.....?").
Apparently they have cancelled the payment 'request' but no answer as to if that means the money will go and then be refunded.
They are all a bunch of incompetent IMO

And today.........it's the turn of the contents insurance.
Last years premium £244.03
This years premium (same cover) £414.11
Quick phone call and asked why its gone up 70% and am told it's because they just do a blanket assumption for premium and that if you then phone them they will do a specific address one.
Point out that my house hasn't magically upped bricks and moved itself so no reason why I couldn't get a 'custom' one in the written quote they sent out. Especially so as she gave me an improved price of £352.10 as we were talking so it must have taken her all of 15 seconds to 'customise' for my exact same house, at exact same address for exact same cover........
Apparently I had a 'new customer' bonus taken of my premium last year (news to me ) but they can give me a 'loyalty' bonus this time round as I phoned them....
Said I'll be shopping around - however I will go with them again as they give best cover for my watches and SWMBO jewellery - but I'll be going back and trying a 'better figure' for them to price match me on this time.............

Use a broker, that way you can be sure you are comparing apples with apples and you don't get messed about. Very few companies will insure us so we are with the NFU, they are fantastic always trying to cut costs for you and being humans you can have sensible discussions with them. We always have a bit of an ordeal come renewal, as only around 4 companies quote due to >£1m rebuild cost.
What we did last year, that seemed to work, was put in a £999,999 rebuild from which we got dozens of quotes and then ring the brokers to adjust the quote with the underwriters given the actual rebuild cost...not that the insurer would ever pay the amount.
Saved around £600 on the policy doing it this way. Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

What i hate about insurance is the wildly different cover levels that on paper seem the same
So you can have unlimted rebuild and 200k contents, accidental etc etc
But when you drill down, single item cover different, valuable item cover is different etc - it just becomes a drain Mike
