Hoping to be an LR owner - things to look for

Hi Everyone,

I'm new on the forum (I will say hi in the welcome area too!), and currently not a LR owner. However, I have been looking for a disco 4 for a long time to replace an aging Jeep (please keep laughter to a minimum).

I've found one I like, in my price range - Disco4, 14plate HSE, full LR service history and 1 owner, but it has done 111k (no MOT advisories, ever). Would anyone be able to guide me on the kind of things I should look out for when checking it over? I'll make sure that the service history includes the cam belt as I think at this mileage its due?

As experts, would you be concerned about a higher mileage model and advise against??

Thanks all very much in advance

Welcome to the (potential) spending zone Thumbs Up

You might want to search for inspection check lists here. They will be very useful to you. At the bare minimum I’d try all gears both in hi and low position, all switches, listen to what sounds the car makes when driving normally, over potholes, breaking, etc. clunking here might mean some bushes might need replacement.

If you have a code reader you might want to read whatever the vehicle has stored. If you haven’t got one, it might make sense to eventually get one.

Indeed, cam belts are due at 7 years or around 112 k miles whichever comes first, see https://disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpi...20MY10.pdf

I don’t think 111 k miles is a lot for a rather recent D4.

Stuff you might want to do is change fluids, transmission, differentials, etc.

The D4 forums will provide a lot of info to you that you can find either searching or just scrolling and reading topics.

Good luck. 8)

Thank you very much kajtzu for a speedy and useful response. I've printed the service schedule! Will use that when talking to the dealer to make sure of the history.

Are the code readers specialised? I know on the Jeep I need a particular type of tool that is £££'s, if there are any that you can recommend i'll try and get one to take with me when I see it (assuming it hasnt been sold before the weekend!).

Thank you for some peace of mind too with regards to higher than average car mileages, im getting excited about the prospect of getting it now Very Happy

If you do buy the D4, the Gap iiD tool is invaluable. There are other tools, but you will get the same answer from the majority of members on here.

The Bluetooth version of the iiD is very useable. Thumbs Up

Welcome by the way!

Thanks again guys. Phoned the dealer and its still available, although its generated quite a lot of interest (possibly the usual selling method of theres a guy wanting it tomorrow etc but who knows). Just waiting to hear back on a part-ex price for mine and how much deposit would hold it till the weekend for me....keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks for the reader details - looks like that will have to be a Christmas present rather than something I can grab now!

There's plenty out there so don't fall for that sales guff!

Great vehicles but enter ownership with eyes wide open (and deep pockets) as they are not cheap to run or maintain. Still nothing quite like a D3 or 4 on the market and you will enjoy it but be prepared to invest in keeping it going Thumbs Up

Me being cynical me, I’d kick the tires of several before buying one. The first vehicle is just as likely to be a lemon as opposed to a great vehicle. You’ll get a better feeling for them if you try several. I kind of assumed there are plenty of HSEs around in the UK.

Also, I wouldn’t put a dime in reserve since if you’re not buying I’m guessing you’ll lose the deposit? Car fever is nice but rational thought should prevail as you’re investing into a depreciating asset. Wink

Seems like the car salesman tactics are same there as here, always immense interest and if you don’t come down there right now the car will be gone Shocked

That scares me slightly! Is it just the general running costs, like servicing and fuel and the usual wear and tear on joints and bushes etc, or should I be expecting larger things to go wrong?!

I'm going to wing not putting a deposit down and if its gone by the weekend then it wasnt meant to be (doesnt help its a 2hour drive from where I am). If that happens I hope that i'll find the same year around the same price again as would love to go for the slightly newer model.

Thanks everyone again for your inputs, much appreciated

In a nutshell when new it was a 40/50k car with 40/50k car running costs and now its older its still got 40/50k car running costs plus 100k or more miles of wear to contend with.

On the upside just about everything is diyable and all the info is on here or google.
