Humming sound when switching off
When I switch off I hear a humming sound both inside and outside. After a few minutes it stops. Is this something to do with the colder weather we are getting? Is it normal?

Its the Webasto supplemental heater winding down. Its the box thing with the mini exhaust, behind the left headlamp under the bonnet.
Do a search for FBH or Webasto, there is lots of history on this one!

Humming sound when switching off
Thanks a lot. What you say makes sense. I just asked a friend of mine, who also has an HSE, if he had a similar problem and he said 'no' but then he also confirmed he never puts any form of heat on or the air con!!

The FBH will fire up if the air temp is 5 or below and the engine is 75 degrees or below. It is fully automatic. Whether or not you use the air con or heating has no bearing on the FBH.

I didn't realise that. I cannot understand why my friend hasn't heard it then.
Thanks for your help.

If this is a humming after you've been driving and tha engine is at normal operating temperature it isn't the FBH purging itself. Sounds more like the high pressure systems shutting down.
How long does it take for the FBH to kick off? This morning I sat in my car for a couple of minutes after starting the engine to look for the telltale smoke, but I didn't see any sign. I think outside temp was 1 or 2.

It takes about a minute to show. If you were low on fuel (warning lamp on) it inhibits the FBH.

It doesn't smoke very much; you can hear it working clearly, though. It starts instantly assuming the parameters are right.
