It seems that clutches are probably a more common fault with the Navara/Pathfinder than turbo's on D3 and D4's, but we never hear the press or anyone else banging on about them. Several years ago BMW's 2-litre diesel engine had very poor Bosch MAF's that required replacing on average every 20-30,000 miles, but were they slated? No. VAG's 2-litre diesel engine has had a lot of oil pump drive failures (wrecked engines), but they've managed to keep that quiet.

Why do we have this obsession of kicking our own (I admit that LR do need a good kick up the backside, and frequently), and believing the PR hype that everything that comes out of Germany and Japan is flawless? I wish I'd have invented rose tinted glasses!

Well said I suppose, you're right on many occasions.

Im in two thoughts now, test drove a 10 plate HSE today at Conwy Land Rover and really liked it. I wasn't wowed, but thats because my daily car is a Z4 coupe. Ive got two options, consolidate my outgoings by only having 1 set of insurance/tax/maintenance as opposed to 2 cars (Z4/Nissan) OR keep my Zed (which I love) and get a nice clean facelift TD5 for work as the Navara is getting a bit ropey after being hammered for 5 seasons. The problem with that is i may be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire in terms of having a reliable towing vehicle for work. I simply cannot afford to, or at least need to minimise the risk of breaking down when I'm 250 miles away from home with a trailer full of marquees behind me.

ARRRRGGHHH!!!!!! I genuinely don't know what to do.

I have done 10,000 miles in the last 3 months ..not a wisper of any issues .

I have had 2 d3's before that and have clocked up over 200,000 between them . Its used for work , and pleasure and i wouldnt hesitate to by another.

Go for it ....they all still under warranty Thumbs Up

By the D4 and enjoy. I own a construction company and my D3 works hard towing, fetching and carrying in all weathers. It also scrubs up brilliantly and becomes the weekend taxi. Mine is an 05 manual with 102k on the clock and has so far had two new clutches. I look after it mechanically and it looks after me and my family.

I too was running another car, a 535d Msport touring but decided I preferred driving the D3. I sold it, reduced my costs and never looked back. Yes they can have their wobbles but so can all cars, but there is NO car that can do what the D3 / D4 can do so effortlessly.

Bite the bullet, get the D4 and enjoy it. Thumbs Up

Like he says though, he needs it for work, so warranty or no warranty it's no use it breaking down if he has a load on the back waiting to be delivered for a special occasion.

BUT Walkzinho, read what people are saying - many many owners have a fault free time and would recommend the vehicle to anyone and everyone! Thumbs Up

For every website complaining about Land Rover I can show you one for any other make. Sadly the reality is people who feel upset think producing a website is a good way to get back at a manufacturer who has little ability to reply.

The website is a bit of a childish rant with very few facts.

However you decide to choose, ignore people like this who have a agenda.

Just to add my two penath I started with a series 2a had it for 21 years and never let me down, had two Range Rovers, A Discovery 200 and Discovery 300 this one I kept for twelve years and none of them ever let me down.
Now have a Disco 3 2006 had it for 18 months and just after I bought it the front offside spring broke (coil spring)
replaced under warranty and since then nothing has gone wrong.
I tow a twin axle caravan and would,nt have any 4x4 vehicle.

loving this thread, its actually turned into disco is a great car thread, im on my second one too, d3 sold with 92k on the clock, 05 manual - regular services and an alternator! current car is the d4 with 32k and no majot issues, brake swith went and some water came into passenger well. our cayenne turbo was a total piece of shi*t constantly in the garage under warranty! prior to this we also had a xc90 d5 again loads of problems mainly gearbox, if you need a 4x4 then nothing else will do! i wouldnt tow with anything else!

I am not convinced they have any more of an agenda than anyone else. Some of the postings on here seem to excuse poor reliability

I had a lousy experience with a D3 - off the road for 7 weeks out of five months ownership with the dealer needing six weeks over four visits to find a wiring fault, the dealer principal trying to deceive me as to my consumer rights and really not looking after me, promising to make a goodwill offer to me but never ever getting in touch again except for 15 months later when he wrote to suggest I came to view the Evoque!

When the d3 was working I loved it, but I can not abide unreliability and the ridiculous design that seems to result in the electrics having a hussy fit with the suspension giving up due to (based on the many posts i have read here) a variety of reasons (eg, wrong brake light bulb, wiring fault, wheel speed sensor fault) seems unacceptable to me...

I would love to have another D3/a D4, but the miserable experience I had is far from isolated and it is impossible to know what the chances are of getting a decent one next (if there is ever going to be a next) time
