Maybe, you should register on the Ramblers Assoc. forum and ask for their advice? "I like to drive my 4x4 to the top of the mountain, and then I want to walk down, which GPS do you recommend?"

I am sure you will get some useful replies.

Wink

I might just try that !

But using legal rights of way of course... not the footpaths they bang on about.

Wish I had some horses to do a damage comparison with... they really make holes to break yer ankles.

I guess a car sat nav for you and a hand-held as a birthday present for your wife might be a solution Laughing

If you do opt for a hand held I'd also recommend taking a look at the memory map software www.memory-map.co.uk - Excellect stuff for Geocaching and route planning.

mmm problem is my present would cost more than hers... could cause issues Wink

I run a Mac and I don't think memory map is available for OS X Sad... but then with Boot Camp and a MacBookPro I could dual boot Windoze and OS X and have the all the fun Wink

Yep, I'm on an OS X Mac too - I use Memory-Map with Virtual PC at home and an XP laptop when out and about.

There a Mac GPS app called Mac SimpleGPS that might be worth looking into - http://www.macsimplegps.com/ - it works with both Garmin and Magellan GPSr

Simon, sadly all PC compatible, no evidence of Mac compatibility. I forgot to say in my last post that the track logging and take me home functions whilst fiddly are superb. It does it by default in the background for either a quick look on the handheld whislt out or back home on the PC to show everyone where you went!

Built in memory is also huge. Enough to hold all of Scotlands roads!

Also very reliable and low battery consumption

The Sat Nav in our RRS (our D3 is a "S" so doesn't have one) regularly advises us to go down "green lanes". This is particularly the case where you head off in a direction away from the "chosen route" to your destination, when it will try to divert you back onto the correct route by the most direct means in its memory. These obviously include all "UCR's" (unclassified country roads) regardless of the actual driveability of these routes. Just near where we live in Northumberland the Sat Nav would have us heading off down routes I know to only be passable in a defender with mud terain tyres, and in one case the route involves a very dangerous ford. A stranger to the area could easily be drawn into situations that neither they nor the vehicle could possibly cope with.

... but any sensible and reasonable person would not even try to drive down a green lane and go off the tarmac.

Not as bad as the recent news story of sat nav systems leading people to a cliff edge.

Trouble is though many green lanes or UCR's start off by looking like a normal tarmac route, but once they pass the last farm house (or similar) they can start to degenerate into a rougher and rougher surface. A stranger to the area may well only realise that the route wasn't a "good" one until they were already in some trouble, or even danger, especially in the dark. Then trying to turn around can actually compound the difficulty .....
