Ultimately, power used to overcome drag increases with the cube of the speed so even a moderate drop in speed e.g. to 60mph from 70mph, would give a noticeable improvement on a long run.
The issue with motorway fuel economy is the MLOC idiots. Even if you're sitting in L1 doing a nice steady speed, you'll happen upon a middle lane  and then have to cross to L3, usually having to accelerate in order to do so safely, which wastes fuel, even though you might idle back down to your L1 speed.
I try to be good on motorways and not drive everywhere at hyperspeed, but the issue with being constantly forced to move around to pass the middle-laners, accelerating for safety, etc. rather than (probably illegally) passing the MLOC on the inside, means it becomes more stressful than the fuel saving is worth. I'd rather just get where I'm going and get away from the idiots on the roads.
Classic recently. Joining the M25, followed a Volvo down the slip road. He was damned if he was going to accelerate properly to get up to speed so we ended up at about 55mph at the bottom of the slip road. Luckily there was room. And then the idiot goes straight to L2. At 55mph. What do you do then? Stay in L1 and risk being done for undertaking or move out around him in to L3, accelerating to do so safely to avoid issues with those already using L3? I did the latter. He sat there oblivious to it all, both hands gripping the wheel a 10-to-2, knuckles almost white, eyes locked straight ahead. Might have been dead, of course. Yes overtaking on the inside on motorways is so common place now. Have these people all driven and learnt to do it in the US and think it is Ok to do it here? So dangerous in my opinion for all sorts of reasons. Gary

Changing lane to pass another vehicle is another matter but if I'm in L1 and there's a slower vehicle in L2 I'm not going all the way out to L3 and back again. I keep a very careful eye on them but I'll stay in L1.

Moleshome I fully agree. The highway code allows for undertaking if the other lanes are moving slower than you are. I.e. if a middle or centre lane driver is driving slower than the outside lane, you're permitted to undertake.
It is safer than changing lane twice, thrice or more on some of the wider motorways. There's no way I'm moving from L1 to L5 on the M25 just to satisfy some moronic driver. The law is on our side on that point. 2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

Just to clarify- assuming traffic is moderately speedy the law specifically allows it. In congestion for example. At full motorway speed undertaking is not specifically permitted but equally it is not a specific offence either so long as it is done with care and without danger to other road users. I disagree, my take is always go to the correct overtaking lane rather than chance an undertake. You may be proceeding carefully and with caution but the driver in the (typically) middle lane is probably not. He / she may have looked in their mirror briefly and see that you are behind but may not appreciate that you are closing in. That is when they start moving across to the inner lane as you are approaching.
Better to overtake always, imho

I do a lot of motorway miles every week. Much of the time I’ll have cc set to 70mph, which is probably a true speed of 67-69 mph depending on tyre tread depth.
I keep to lane 1 as much as it’s practical to do so and when there’s a hard shoulder I’ll happily overtake slower vehicles in lane 2 and sometimes lane 3 (  ) whilst remaining in lane 1.
I’ve twice done this in full view of a marked Police car, in the last year.
However, I don’t do this when I’m in lane 1 on “smart” sections of motorways though, due to not having a safety zone to steer into. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

What the Police don't like is changing lanes to specifically overtake on the inside of a vehicle. Which I regularly see when a motorway is busy. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
