Importing to Sweden - Making suitable for LHD country

I've decided to import my V8 Disco 3 to Sweden as I'll be here for some time. So far the import process has been ok but now it will get a technical inspection and then after that the equivalent of an MOT.

For the technical inspection I've been advised that the lights will have to be changed for a LHD country, setting the switch to centre apparently isn't enough. They also said the fog lights will be the same...

Couple of questions:
Anyone done this and have any advice or experience?
Can I change the lights to more basic ones for the inspection without any issues (Car has adaptive BI Xenon from factory)?
Anything else I am missing or not considering?

Tack!

I'm sure I've read that the headlights have selectable left and right hand cut off patterns, with a lever on the lamp?

Might be worth a forum search.

Thanks Richard, yeah from what I can find there is a switch but it doesn't completely change the light pattern, just stops it blinding oncoming traffic by centering it. Happy to be told otherwise of course.... it would be welcome news (",)

The fog lights may just need adjusting.I’m pretty sure that when I fitted mine, the spread of light was pretty central, and I had to adjust to suit RHD driving. Worth trying before shelling out.

The lights on a D3 come left or right handed, I had a pair of LHD lights I used in Finland and then swapped them back for RHD ones when I got back, unfortunately sold with the car but check fleabay or similar and you might be lucky !

U know anyone locally that has a D3? I could suggest you do a lights swap for the day of the test. Whistle Whistle

Thanks all!

I had thought the same DSL.... I'm pretty new here and don't really have a social circle. I did join the Swedish Land Rover club but it's not so active. I have asked the question there too.... so lets see....

IIRC the Xenon headlamps had a L-R switch. Not the halogens.

I can find LHD halogen ones for sale second hand here. Is it the same cabling/plug and play if I'm taking out xenons? Anyone know?

Upgrade from halogen to regular xeon/HID (non-AFS) is plug and play. In principle one needs to edit CCF and tell the vehicle that the lights are HID so it knows to supply enough voltage at start to prevent them from flickering. But it will work without.

My understanding is that you have AFS rather than regular xenons.

I do not think you can upgrade easily from halogen to AFS since there is more to it than just changing the light modules. You notice this if you look at the electrical schematics to the lights, there is an AFS controller (adaptive headlight control module) for example. Hence, downgrading is probably also not so straight forward, unfortunately. Search retrofitting AFS on this forum and you’ll see previous attempts.

Mvh

My D3 worked with LHD Xenons on the car without an issue (Dont Ask) except the flickering at startup as I hadnt had the CCF change done

I have a pair of D4 halogens, from a MY2011 if that would fit. I have no idea about connector and pinning compatibility though. I managed to get my hands on a pair of Xenons and now the original halogens are left over.

OP would also need a D4 grille, D4 front bumper and cut the D3 wings or replace with D4 wings among other things to fit the D4 headlights…. Unfortunately. Whistle

LHD give it a go!

Having also a LHD V8 occasionally I have had to source a part or two, it can be unrewarding but these are a few of my tips.

Firstly. I use Ebay and trawl the individual countries via the flag menu. You may find that it is possible to find stuff accidentally restricted to sale in that country because the ‘worldwide’ option is not ticked. What I have noted is that items in the UK Ebay invariably will be available from GB to say French buyers BUT not always the reverse, maybe we are a bit more global

Secondly, there are plenty of European Copart buyers for example of RHD vehicles who transport back to Europe then sell back to the UK market as breaker parts, very often the website has the LHD breaker parts too. On a similar tack V8’s are old news in Dubai and I found it was marginal value to ship stuff back to UK a friend put me in touch with a number of breakers ( at that time I wanted an engine AJV8) all would create a deal for me! At a price.

Finally, try breakers in Europe some I expect you will find are not Ebayers., there are a few I have made contact with but even with Google Translate it is was a fail for me on this one. At one time I wanted newer set LHD seats surprised I got them from a chap in Crawley area

I might have thought it was easier to get lights from LHD vehicle which in my simple world would be plug aand play.

Finally, finally there is the USA what a mine…..costs £300 shipping a $700 engine 60k back here. In the UK I had 3 no prospects in US 30no so quite a difference it really helps though if you have relatives I got cold feet on that one as was for RHD and hell of a way to take it back.
