Indicators blink speed faster then normal

Several times recently I have noticed that the blink speed on my indicators is double (approx) the normal speed. When ignition is turned off and car restarted it goes to normal speed. I'm wondering whether this is an indication of a more serious fault that is about to occur.
Anyone had this or got any experience of it?
Cheers

Hi

Could it be a bad earth / bulb on one of the front or rear indicator clusters, or maybe the relay

That makes perfect sense. Thanks. Will check out bulbs and holders tomorrow and reseat/clean. I remember now having some strange effects going on with a previous car (MK2 escort!) which cleared after reseating.
I was worried it might be the start of a bigger earth problem. Likely rears as from lights are new.
Cheers.

Ur so very welcome , fingers crossed it’s a simple fix

Also don’t know if it’s the same but as u look inside the boot there’s that small access panel , LH side , there are a few earth connections in there as well , can’t remember if there are earth body connections behind the rear lamp clusters

Plus I bought some stainless steel brushes for my dremel which I found perfect for cleaning connections

Also found this , apologises not 100% if it’s for a D3 or a D4, plus I wonder if there could be an issue where the indicator stalk plugs into the loom behind the airbag , another thought is could the trailer socket wiring cause a problem , when I had issues with some of my earths I used a light testing lamp which allowed me to test the earths one by one

hopefully it may be of some use to u

Sorry for the delay. Been pretty busy so only just got around to looking further into this. I removed both rear light clusters and reseated the bottom bulbs in both. (Front lights were new a few months ago so less likely to be them.
I couldn't see anything obvious (breaks in wiring, rusty/discoloured bulb holders ) but also couldn't work out how to remove and check the top bulbs where the indicators are. The bottom bulbs have twist in bulb holders but the top ones do not. Haven't checked the handbook yet , which will be the next port of call.
Cheers

Hi gary

Good to hear from u , as far as I’m aware on the D4 the indicator lamp, stop lamp, and tail lamp are LED units

Plus I wonder if doing a hard reset might help seeing it goes back to normal after cycling the key, cleaning the earth posts either side inside the boot cubby holes

Then I don’t think it would be a bad idea to get some diagnostics plugged in as that may give u a better direction to go on without starting to chase ur tail , also assume ur battery is also fully charged and not throwing spurious errors

Hope u get on ok

The front headlight indicator PY24W bulbs oddly are still halogen.

Thanks both. LED ! Of course . Why didn’t I realise that. We’ve worked out it’s only the right indicator that does this, and as I say it happens infrequently.
I have an IID BT tool so will plug it in. I’ll also check the front bulbs and those earthing points. It’s going in for 7 year service to a very good independent specialist next week so can also talk with them. It seems such a minor thing, but I’m concerned it may be the tip of a bigger iceberg that will be along in the near future.
Cheers

Made some progress on this. Used the IID to read faults. Got two:
B123B-11 Front right turn signal. General electrical failure- circuit short to ground

B123B-15 Front right turn signal - circuit short to battery or open.

Not sure why I didn't use the tool to read codes before. I guess I thought it was too minor to pick up! Anyway, it has successfully pinpointed the fault to front right

I tried to check and reseat the bulb. Eventually worked out I had to remove a large rubber seal on the end of the headlight to get to it, but couldn't get my hand in there to remove the bulb. After a struggle I got the seal back on. I think the headlight will have to be released to do it. A pain as I have secured my grill and headlights . I'll have another go when I have time.
Strange as both complete headlights were replaced, including bulbs 6 months ago ( don't ask!) so really wasn't expecting it. I'll also check the earthing points at the front mentioned.
Thanks again.
 Gary

Hi gary

Glad u made some progress

Managed to find a pic I took ages ago, behind ur drivers side headlight there are some earth posts , some of them are for the headlight grounds

Wonder as a temp measure if u can get a jump lead onto those ground points, then the other end of the lead onto a good earth , alas know access isn’t very good , just an idea , plus trying to think if taking the airbox out will give u more room to those posts

If not remove grounds, give them a good clean and reinstall using some coppaslip on the ground posts , hopefully u don’t have to remove ur headlights with the grill being secured

Hope that helps and u get it sorted out

Thanks again for all the useful advice. My car had to go in for the big seven year service and I asked my garage to take a look and see if they could see anything. Turns out both headlight electrical connectors were damaged when the lights got stolen ,causing loose connections (plastic clips broken and indicator wire no longer connecting properly in into the back of the connector), but the Land Rover dealership missed this (or ignored it - they must have realised they were not clipping together properly! Both front light connectors have issues. Had the lights replaced about 6 months ago under an insurance claim so been in touch with the dealership body shop and now waiting to hear back. Will also be in contact with insurers as there will probably be additional costs. The indi has secured them pretty well so hopefully no immediate issues.
Belts now done (first Euro 6 Disco they have done) and they also confirm earth strap and arms are in good shape . Phew!! Wallet now empty.

I wanted to wrap up my topic on this by reporting back progress for anyone else reading it. As I said damaged connectors were found during service. Took it back to the Land Rover body shop that replaced the lights and they accepted , with no challenge, that the connectors were damaged, and that they should have been replaced when the lights were replaced. They took the car in and replaced the connectors and car back in a single day.
Obviously not great that the issue wasn't picked up 6 months ago, but sometimes mistakes are made and it is what is done about it that matters. All resolved now (hopefully). Glad I asked the garage that did the service to check things out.
Cheers

Thank you Gary.
Should have said thanks for your input and suggestions. As much as anything with these cars, it's great to feel you're not on your own in trying to solve issues.
Take care
