I've had my 62 reg D4 HSE for nearly a year now and the service light is flashing. Stratstone called me and quoted £683 for what I presume is a B service going off the age, the car has done 45k miles. It still has just over a years LR warranty as it was an approved used car.
After nearly falling off my chair I spoke to a couple of friends with similar cars they get theirs done at a garage near Carlisle, not fancy and looks like a normal place with no mention of Land Rover anywhere. They quoted £220 which is a massive difference and promised to use genuine LR parts with evidence for the warranty.
The garage said the LR warranty wouldn't be affected and my friends really recommend them but I am nervous due to it being so much cheaper. Can anyone please reassure me that the LR warranty would be good? Is there anything else I should ask before going ahead?

What does your warranty T&Cs say, if anything, on non franchise servicing?

So long as they follow the LR service schedule and use genuine parts then it's perfectly fine.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Not sure of your location but get a price from Team Valley Land Rover at Gateshead a Land Rover approved service centre, great guys and good prices, going to continue to use them to service mine even though I'm down in Derbyshire!

The warrenty cannot force you to use dealership only (from EU block exemption rules - might change in the future )
All it can say is that services must be carried out in line with manufacturers instructions and must be done via a VAT registered garage

In theory it's fine. In practise it could delay any warranty claim, whilst the company checks that the Indy did use genuine LR parts and followed LR schedule etc.

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to go ahead with the indy as >£450 difference for a simple service is just too great and they are also very near to my house rather than 50 miles away. I'll make sure every part is genuine and they follow the service schedule exactly, I've printed off the schedule from the site wiki which is extremely useful.

and ask for a fully itemised invoice that matches everything that was required as part of the service. Doesnt need a price against all items, just details what they've done.

Don't think they have to use genuine parts, think under the block exemption is parts must be of equal quality or better.
An update, serviced yesterday for £266 all in, massive saving on £683 LR wanted. It was a bit more that estimated as they didn't realise the high cost of the low sulphur oil needed but that was fine. I printed out the service schedule from the wiki which they filled in and wrote all the LR genuine part numbers they used on the bill.
Very happy, great service, very local and very reasonably priced.

During the last 16 years of LR ownership I've used franchised dealers for all my vehicles during warranty period and LR indi outside
I know what the rules say but I can't be bothered to argue the point when something goes wrong and I think LR goodwill outside warranty is more likely if you've FLRSH reading forums
I've had some awful LR dealer service over the years but just can't face the risk when an engine blows at 40 months etc Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW
