Intermediate oil/fluid changes.......

Hi chaps,

Looks like I'll be keeping the D3 for at least 5 years. a) Because it is so good & b) because it's gonna be worth nowt after 3 years so may as well run it into the ground. (Unless it starts giving me grief in which case I'll take the hit.) But I know that the Jaguar servicing schedule is very minimal to say the least, to keep costs down. LR are going to have the same/similar philosophy (unless you say otherwise) so having lived in the USA for a few years where I used to get my oil/filter every 3k miles and, brake fluids/air filter changed every other one, I wanted to do an intermediate oil change at 6k miles to give my car the best chance of running smooth for a long time.

So what I want to know, if I go to a main dealer and ask for it to be done, will they do it if it is not required by LR. Will this invalidate the warranty etc.

Thoughts...............

yes, the dealers will love you! No it won't affect your warranty and will certainly help the engine.
Doing it soregularly would you not be able to do it yourself. Should only take a hour or so and would save you at least 50% of dealer costs. The Large One will be able to sell you the parts cheaper than your local dealer.

Just checked my oil it's black after less than 6k miles. It hasn't used hardly any oil though.

In the TDV6 the oil will be black after less than 1k, don't worry about it. I change it every 7.5k and it always seems to run better afterwards. My first D3 used about 1l up to the first change then none afterwards, second one used a about half that, it's an iron block so will absorb some but it's hardly noticeable on some D3s

I would do it myself but Mrs DSL says no way as she knows how much mess I've made in the past. Putting the sump plug back in helps reduce said mess!!!! Embarassed Embarassed

The current US service schedule is a dealer oil change every 7,500 miles - and this is 'FREE' for the duration of the warranty.

I asked the stealership about the oil they use, and they said it was not synthetic - which surprised me.

Is the UK service interval different then?

So is this because the UK current engine is the V6 Diesel, and the US engine is the V8 Petrol?

Probably. Not sure. But likely Confused

In some markets the TDV6 service schedule is sooner than in the UK though... probably due to arduous conditions (temperature etc) and fuel quality.

Always believed that 5,000 mile or so was a good bet for oil changes. Cheaper than a worn out engine!

And I've always been a big fan of fully synthetic oil (Mobil1)

Will be tempted to provide my own Mobil1 to the dealer, even though the their oil is 'FREE' - they can use my oil and just give me free labour.

I see that 5W30 is the standard oil on the V8 - and Mobil1 have a couple of 5W30 oils that meet the spec (and in fact exceed it).

What's the oil spec on the TDV6?

Same spec.... well actually this so slightly different (just looked)

Engine oil - Diesel vehicles
Use 5W/30 oil meeting ACEA: B1 or B3

V8 uses...

Engine oil - V8 Petrol vehicles
Use a 5W/30 oil meeting specification ACEA: A1 or A3, or API SJ or SL.

And TBH I have always stuck to the service schedule in a vehicles handbook and never changed the oil ahead of time.

Never had a knackered engine due to wear based on not changing the oil early.

Agree, but I have never thought about the owner who has the car at 100k miles. It maybe me this time!

Just had a quote from a Dealer for £115 all in.

The Large One has just done me a great deal on a couple of oil filters.

Cheaper to get Nick to send them up, than go 1/2 a mile and get them over the counter.

My parts supplier from now on. Thumbs Up
