Intermittent dash failure
Hello,
Every now and then whilst driving along my dash fails, all needles hit zero and then it bounces back into life. Sometimes this will only be milli seconds and other times it could be a few minute.
Common fault? any ideas?
Thanks

I'm no expert, but sounds like a loose wire or grounding issue. In the footwell on the drivers side (behind the kick trim on your right foot) there will be a lot of black cables bolted to the chassis - are they all intact?

There is a problem with the solder joints on the back of the dash, lead free solder was used and after a time has started to crack. Its an easy job to repair once you have the dash out and stripped down which is the hard part.
Where abouts in Westbury are you Paul?

This is a common problem with D3 instrument clusters (I discovered all this when I had exactly the same issue with mine!). It's all to do with the switch to lead-free solder due to RoHS regulations - the lead-free stuff is absolutely terrible compared to the old full-fat stuff which isn't permitted to be used commercially any more.
The way to get it sorted is to get in touch with Patryk at www.totaltronics.com - he offers a fixed-price guaranteed repair for £239. You can either take the cluster out yourself and ship it to him, or if you're close enough you can take the vehicle to him and he'll deal with it there and then. I did this, and it took him less than two hours to take the cluster out of the D3, apply the necessary fixes, re-fit it and send me on my way. It's behaved perfectly ever since. Highly recommended.
