Iphone connection question.
Looking at getting the much debated Iphone 3G but am confused re the connection types to t'internet. When I look at the O2 website for coverage. I know HDSPA is sooper cooper fast and not available outside major towns/cities as shown on the O2 website. Outside these areas there is GPRS & EDGE, latter being former on steroids but I have know way of knowing whether my area has either or both. Is there any way of finding this out, tried qoogle & got nowhere.
The iPhone ain't much use to me if I can only use the fancy features in Inverness & Central Belt Scotland. How fast is GPRS & EDGE for web browsing??? Thoughts anyone as I have a green light to buy one but can't justify it if I'm only going to be able to use it properly once in a blue moon???

You'll connect over GPRS or EDGE or 3G or HSDPA - from slow to fast whichever is available.
Also you have WiFi support like your iPod Touch.
Either way you'll be better off than just using the Touch. As long as you have a phone signal you can connect to the internet.
Don't worry about it.

GPRS and EDGE are slow. All right for on / off reloads on news or weather apps or text email downloads but browsing would drive you nuts if you had to do it a lot.
I live in the sticks but have Wi-Fi at home and was supprised how many places have G3. Don't forget that you get free access to 'the cloud' and 'bt open zone' wi-fi points as well as any unencrypted private wi-fi points you may come across..

With WiFi do you have to search for networks every time or does it just join automatically. I assume that non btopenzone or cloud have to be searched out???

It will remember networks. Or join those you already have a password for.
Do you run 2.2 on your iPod ??? If so the Wifi will be the same as on the iPhone running 2.2

Mine just updates itself when I go onto ITUNES, never had a problem with connection wherever I go to be honest, and its surprising how many houses and shops etc have unlocked access or free wifi. Mine roams constantly.

Running 2.2 but don't have BT access so not seen how it works.
Slightly OT but does anyone know how to change Maps back to miles as the upgrade has set it to Km & I want to get it back to miles???

Derek it will just pick up wifi where ever it is, in the same way your pc will tell you local networks. You really need the 3g for good internet experience, but like London Lad said it is ok for weather etc type apps. A good reason to go to Mickey Ds I guess!DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Many thanks all, iPhone has been ordered and will be delivered tomorrow! Had to get order in before Mrs DSL realises. Now better get the Engels before she realises that I have purchasing freedom!

The Km instead of miles in the maps app is a bug in the last software upgrade. They think the UK is part of Europe!
If you set country to USA you will get miles in the maps app but US biased search results!
Should be fixed in the next update.

I use mine all over Europe and sometimes the mail sync won't work with some 3g networks. I don't know why, but in holland for example I have to switch 3g off and then I get edge which is slower, but ok ish.
I have wifi at home, at work in various office locations and in quite a few airpors you'll get bt or the cloud. You'll generally be presented with a list of available wifi connections which you need to select, but very simple to use. You'll be a happy man once you've got used to it's interface and learning the best way to get used to the predictive spelling. I love it!!
