The ATCM on the D3 is more than capable of maintaining the temperature you set, if it isn't doing so, theres a problem could be something as simple as low coolant or airlock, low refrigerant pressure or blocked filter or even a blocked pollen filter

Foam pad is the simplest solution to try first. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I've been noticing a requirement to increase the temp setting during a long(ish) drive, maybe this is the reason. Must have a look ...Regards,

I get no warm air from the heater unless its up full and then it is like being in an oven. Going in on Tuesday to get sorted, i hope
I thought it stood for All Terrain Control Module (or Association of Town Centre Managers) - clearly it also has something to do with heating?

there should be a foam insulator around the temp sensor. If its missing or displaced then the sensor picks up heat from behind the dash and keeps reducing the temperature of the hevac system to try and compensate.
No foam pad behind or around mine. I took the grill panel off, but you can't get to the back of the sensor with out taking the centre panel trim off,
You can then see the white tube protector for the sensor leads. I pack a bit of sponge around the back of the sensor to try and insulate it from the heater.

Guys,
I have the same apparent heating problem and no foam around the sensor in mine either although I'm a bit reluctant to add something that doesn't appear to have ever been there?
Before I put the foam in can some one confirm categorically that there should be foam around it? Seems to me that we are just damping its sensitivity and stopping it from doing its job. Or is this just a case of poor design with the sensor being fitted near an abnormally warm section of the dash?

Foam pad was a dealer fix for the problem. Had mone done under warranty.
It was open cell foam (grey) Someone may have a photo.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

This is the little grill just to the left of the steering column ?
Do you pull the little grill out to check for the foam pad, or the whole trim panel - I'm loathed to tug it too hard in case I break something.... Jim

Random thought - the FBH doesn't kick in when you're low on fuel does it - so presumably the cabin doesn't warm up as quickly? You've a decent amount of fuel in it haven't you?2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

John,
Until this morning it's not been cold enough (below 6degC) for the FBH to fire up (and I've still not fiited the override timer ), but at 4degC this morning, the FBH fired up and did help to warm things up quicker than normal..........but I still had the temperature set to 26-28, and had the fan speed turned up to get things warm.
Gonna have a look at the aforementioned foam pad thing by the cabin temperature sensor - I just need to know how to get the grill off !Jim

Jimbo,
Its on clips just pull it the whole section comes out in one.
Haven't put any foam in mine but I have centralised the thermocouple so that it doesn't touch the sides. Early days but it seems to have helped. Will test it over the next week.
Agree it just pulls off, but you cannot get to the back without taking another bit off - such as the centre panel surround.
I did try the bit of foam route but it does not seem to have helped on mine.

Dumb question from a new owner of D3 (MY06).
What is the FBH people are referring to?
My heater appears OK but then it hasnt been that cold.
My only gripe about the heated seats is that I can't select just the back as I can in my BMW
