Is this a record for a fault?

Just picked up a new TDV6 SE auto.
55 miles later on the M40-engine fault!

Stopped for 1/2 hr to pick up kids, seems ok now.
Somewhat worrying to say the least.

I think the record is within 10 minutes... same fault too. Not that this is a good record to have.

Hope all is OK now but get your dealer to check all connectors etc !

The "Engine Fault" message that seems to be plaguing people is a various one. It can mean a miriad of things. The ECM does store fault events, with codes, that should quickly lead to a diagnosis - as long as the herbert using the T4 knows what they are doing and doesn't wipe the messages.

Loose connectors can be difficult to diagnose, but often manifest themselves in a missing message between control modules.

Provided that you don't get a red warning light, nothing too critical should be going on; if it is cured by a restart, then some form of sensor/connector issue would be a likely cause.

I had - engine system fault - flash up momentarily at approximately 50 - 60 miles on my way home from the dealer on first day. It hasn't happened since, and we've now covered 1000 miles.
Some say the glass is half full. Others that it is half empty. I say 'Are you drinking that?"

I've had the handbrake warning (orange) light come on for no reason at 850 miles. Stop/turn off ignition/restart - fault gone. Dealer comment - yes Sir, thats the fix.

Do all Disco's throw up errors at approx 50 to 60 miles ??? After reading a few owners comments it seems they do.

My TDV6 Auto SE had a 'Problem' with all sorts of error messages and bongs at 55 miles on day one, and now after over 1000 miles has not shown a single error since.

Can't LR advise new owners to look out for these messages, so we are pre-warned and prepared when it all seems to be going wrong ?

Does anyone actually know what common problems the onboard computers are seeing so soon after PDI / delivery? Someone must know ? Low battery voltage ??????

P.S I'm a computer disgnostic engineer, so don't be afraid to include all the computer speak in any replys.

Cheers, Nick

Putting aside messages relating to genuine fault conditions, it does seem that voltage and/or missed handshakes between ECUs can cause false positives - and thus create error messages.

Most of these occur at or immediately after start-up. An error once the system has passed its power on diagnosis is more likely to be either a genuine fault report, or a faulty sensor or connector - the latter being influenced by vehicle movement/vibration.

These missed messages, and start-up errors, I would liken to, to use a Windows analogy, the XP security centre warning you on boot-up that your anti-virus software is turned off when it hasn't even started up yet. It does seem that the X/Y switch on the CAN, along which these ECU communications travel, can be interrogated and reconfigured to deal with the sequencing of communication/messages.

If you are experiencing problems, and have a friendly service manager, given your background they might welcome the opportunity to show you the diagnostic programme in action.

I've just turned 1000 miles with no problems whatever ....absolutely glorious to drive.....and I think I know the secret of no faults.

You have to treat your Disco affectionately like you would your puppy..... child...... bank manager.....mistress, and to the extreme perhaps, even your wife !! If you have PTI you can even send her text messages.

Tell her you love her................. Your reward will be trouble free motoring Very Happy

p.s. advice : make sure you delete your sent texts - big trouble otherwise !!

Update; On Friday had to stop on motorway hard shoulder to reset the engine management fault. Dropped in to a local LR dealer, they reset the faults and said there was nothing they could do.

Same fault Monday, car now with supplying dealer.

Poxy thing has only done 500miles.

Wish I'd bought another Volvo.

Update; car still with dealer. having new turbo charger fitted and they found 'low fuel pressure'. Total mileage 550.

The dealers have been pretty good, keeping me informed etc., but it is galling to have paid over 40K for a D3 and be driving around in a poxy Freelander!

I should have bought a Volvo.

'tis a great car mind when it works (occasionally).

Bitwobbly, what's your fuel consumption after the turbo change? Mine's at 15.6 mpg now! But it's true we have -12 here...
