| Is my turbo about to give up?!! |

Hi everyone,
I posted a topic yesterday about EGR valves. My 05 Disco 3 started performing poorly, getting bad MPG and occasionally hesitating/losing power completely for short periods (a few seconds). Occasionally after starting it would not rev more than 1100 rpm in drive. Switched it off, restarted it and off it went (this happened 3 or 4 times).
Anyway, a service and diagnostic check pointed to the EGR valves. Had the car in to Bells today who did their blanking mod. Drove the car home and it seemed 100% better. More lively, instantly better mpg etc. However, just left work and for about 10 minutes after starting, I couldn't get the car to move more than crawling pace at 1100rpm again (just as before). Eventually, after going from park/neutral/drive/sport about 50 times, switching the ignition off/on, it came back to life and drove home perfectly normally. Help!!
I'll give Peter Bell a call tomorrow but I appreciate your opinions! Could it be that running on faulty EGR's for some time has coated the turbo in crud and causing it stick and not spin up periodically? I'm totally guessing here!

More likely that the faulty EGR's are causing reduced power mode, there is no flow sensor but the closed-loop feedback from the EGR's can initiate reduced power to protect the engine, blanking will not prevent this - a message i've tried to get across but the 'blank and be damned' crowd chose to ignore this

Thanks for the reply Iain! (I got your email re: servicing by the way - thanks for that, I'll be in touch next time round).
What do you suggest - fit new EGR's in leiu of the blanking mod, returning it to standard?

Are both EGR's u/s? the DTC's will indicate which is faulty, also bear in mind that the usual blanking plates are on the outlet, not inlet side of the valve - which won't prevent exhaust gases corroding the existing or new valves
Personally, i'd replace the faulty valve(s) and allow the D3 to
operate 'as intended'

Yep, both valves faulty according to the service diagnostic, and the diagnostic at Bells Auto today. However, when he got it apart and watched/listened to the valves operating, one seemed to be functioning normally. Both were blanked off and the butterfly valve removed. Running better than it ever has - just this obvious big problem occasionally at start up!

Any other DTC's? especially transmission if auto? unlikely to be contamination of the turbo due to the high EGT's experienced compared to the post EGR temps
The VVT turbo also carries out an end-to-end calibration check at power down, any issues would be logged as a pending DTC

Has been happening before and after service. Has been happening before and after EGR blanking....... Just had another run out in it. Started on the button, ran like a dream - no issues. Only thing I can notice is that maybe (and I say mabe because I'm in 'paranoid' mode) the water temp gauge is taking longer to come up to the halfway mark. I'll run a tank of fuel through it this weekend and see what's what. Hmmm

Bodsy, for MY2007 onwards, just say no - it no workeee 
When the EGRs are open the car expects the fresh air usage to drop proportionally, and dumps the car into limp mode (no suspension, no gears, reduced power, no DTC, no programs, no range etc) when it opens the EGRs yet still uses as much clean air (i.e. what happens when you blank the EGRs). Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."

Check the intercooler to inlet manifold hose - the one on the offside, check it for oil stains, it may have a small split in it or a loose hose clip, same goes for the hose clip between the air filter box and the ducting across the engine cooling fan duct
The question about the service relates to correct connection of the fuel filter pipework, if the issue occured before the service then that isn't the issue

Ha ha - I deserved that reply about the cold! 
Will check those hoses in the daylight tomorrow and report back.... Thanks for all the replies folks!
I'm tempted to shell out on the new EGR's, but I'd hate to spend £500 and be left with exactly the same problem  Would issues with the auto box, or even throttle problems show up on the diagnostics check?

Should do, either as pending or historic DTC's
all depends on the quality and the scope of the diagnostics - and the person using it
