I fully agree that the XC90 ticks lots of boxes as a replacement for a D4, and is a good option for a lot of owners who like me are wondering where to go after a D4.

Unfortunately one critical area where it falls short for me is towing capacity. @2250Kgs instead of 3500Kgs

It isn't something a lot of owners need to consider of course, so the XC90 should be considered as a serious option.
Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

I needed to find something to replace my D4, and it needed to ability to tow 3,500kgs.

As a general runabout, I wasn't too bothered about what it did and didn't have, for long runs out I have something else.

The 3,500kgs facility really does narrow the options down.

I ended up with a VW Touareg Altitude. It took me some time to find one without air suspension (a problem on these) and also without a sunroof and lots of electrical goodies (also problems)

I found a 2010 one in good condition but with a fault code that VW wanted £900 to fix. Reality is a small bracket costing £4.99 did the job (It's a swirl flap fault, common to all VW/Audi V6 Diesels)

The car is far better than I was expecting, and at £4,k cost a third of what I sold my D4 for. Adding a tow bar, a service and getting DAB brought the cost up to just £5k, a bargain.

No oil dilution problems, no flat batteries, and it's a pleasure to drive.

Either I have been lucky, or these are seriously underrated.

England 2014 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 XS Auto Corris GreyDiscovery 4

2018+ Touareg tows 3.5T.

It ticks the boxes for me tbh:
3.0 V6 diesel, loads of torque
Loaded with tech
Air suspension option
Lots of room
More reasonable used compared to Q7, GLE.

And from the owners pages on FB, nowhere near the amount of issues as the D5 page reports.

Slightly ugly though. Black editions look much better.
