Is this job urgent?

Hi again guys,

I have taken D3 to LR for a gearbox issue but also been told it needs a new gearbox sump? (Google translate...). The quote is £930 and I'm already quoted £2300 for gearbox and brake pipes.
Can anybody in the know tell me if it looks that urgent as I just did French MOT (contrôle technique) and it was not even mentioned as an advisory.
The pictures were sent by the garage so I guess they make the point but wasted on me...

They can leak under where the yellow wires are.
Can't see on my phone.

To fix requires sump removal, replacement and oil

Cheers Pete. Is that a straightforward mechanical job that I can ask an indépendant 4x4 garage with no LR diagnostics etc to do for me?

Yes anyone who works on ZF6speed gearbox can do that.
Or anyone who can use google.


Only trouble is the metal cross member is in the way

Yes. The ZF6 gearbox sump can be changed, mechatronics sleeve replaced and refilled with fluid without any LR specific knowledge. When figuring out the amount of ATF to put in, you first put in a good amount, then turn on the engine and finally make sure you "refill until it drips" when the engine is running.

Since you're changing the sump - get the ZF OEM (or TerraFirma .. or ..) metal sump with a separate filter instead. The LR OE sump has an integrated filter and to replace one with an identical it you'll have to do all kinds of things... like jack up the engine a bit. If you replace it with an aftermarket sump the filter will be separate and can simply be inserted and the sump will pretty much slide in. Much easier. Thumbs Up

Are they replacing the gearbox in that price or just parts of it? If you supply a new sump for a few hundred Euro, they will be able to replace when it's out of the car. If they're replacing the whole gearbox, don't worry as the new one will be ok.
