Great Thread!

With it having 'New Belts' etc, have you considered that it was timed wrongly and that the reason for not running?

Have you checked the timing?

I look forward to your bulletins ref progress on resurrecting this old girl. As for doggy smells? not the end of the world and easily cured as you no doubt know. Yes I understand moving the body round to your steam cleaning facilities as being a logistic problem but a good sousing in waxoil or similar would not put me off buying if I was in the market for a D3. When you have completed this one how do you fancy another similar job from a club member with a dead engine? See "Hayden" who has a similar problem with a seized engine but can get his hands on a good running 2.7 engine. Please keep us all in the loop ref progress with this job......Dave. Thumbs Up

If it wasn’t for the fact it’s been keeping the 2 poster tied up for weeks I would happily keep doing them, if I could do it full time I think I’d be able to turn them around in a day if there wasn’t to much swapping over and other work whilst the body was off as this is what’s slowed this down to a crawl, the little jobs on the chassis side are all done and all the bits are stripped from both engines but I just haven’t had time to put it all back on and then I have the brake pipes and rust treatment to do, trouble is now that not only is it crazy busy I also have a 13 litre Volvo engine to put back together that the liners had gone porous on, and also a Transit engine that needs putting back together once the block and crank come back from the machine shop after a rebore and a polish and both are paying customers so when the day to day stuff is done I have to drop onto those first and I won’t delegate any engine work as I’m too fussy and only have myself to blame if something isn’t quite right Big Cry

Cheers Mark Thumbs Up

Browny I did consider the timing but the crank is stuck suggesting it’s spun a bearing but I will strip it once the car is back together and find out what’s going on in there, you never know if it’s worth saving I can find another car for the next thread Thumbs Up

You sound a bit like me when doing this kind of work, "my way or no way" you only have yourself to blame should a problem arise. We all make mistakes and after a few "self bxllxxkings" you learn to get it right first time as most of the times the costs land at your door with a dull thud?????????

Thanks GalwayGreen it’s nice to know people are interested Thumbs Up

Dave I do try to be meticulous and make sure everything is done right but I am not perfect and recently paid the price for a very silly mistake,
I recently took the head off of a little berlingo hdi to regrind the valves as 2 of them weren’t sealing after an injector change and lots of carbon falling down onto the piston, this little van actually belonged to one of our main suppliers so even more embarrassing, once the valves were perfect I refitted the head and new cambelt kit then run it up and it sounded perfect so I called the supplier and told them it was up and running and to send down some filters etc so I could give it a service and road test and then they could have it back later that day... well that didn’t happen as on admiring how well it sounded (was missing badly when it came in) I decided to give it a little rev but mid rev it self destructed oops, you just know from the sound it made that it sucked something in as I revved it up but no bolts/nuts or tools was missing. I had whilst putting it back together plugged everything up whilst I was called to check on others work or help them with something they are struggling with but on this occasion missed a piece of blue rag in one inlet of the head when I put the manifold back on Banging Head
That was an expensive mistake and one which the lads constantly remind me of Laughing

Thanks Thumbs Up

It’s the 2007MY pumps that are the common ones for failure but nothing lasts forever and I think it would be worth spending the extra to have the pump replaced while the belts are being done even if it were just for piece of mind Thumbs Up

I agree with Sharpie. When I had my belts changed, my dealer who replaced the belts said it wasn't necessary to replace the oil pump. Over the next twelve months, I was nervous due to the cost of an engine failure, so I took my 2005 D3 back to them to change the oil pump.

Regrettably, in changing the oil pump, they damaged the water pump, which failed. Luckily, I was travelling slowly at the time and no damage done. They replaced the water pump at no cost to me.

Best Wishes,
Peter

Small update

Only had an hour today so only a little update I got the brake pipes made from front to back but I did have help with that and I gotta say he did a great job of copying the shape I still need to flare the ends and fit them before a pic, while they were being done I swapped the injectors over and in the process found that on the old engine one of the rear cylinders had 2 injector washers on it which can’t have done the balance any good, hopefully next week I will have a bit more time and hope to get the engine ready to go back in the chassis

Lots of progress at last

Well today I got loads done, I got the Eu4 hp Fuel pump fitted and the egrs, common rails & fuel pipes which then allowed me to torque the injectors down, I fitted the new cambelts and found that crankshaft locking tool wouldn’t fit in the hole in the block so that had to be modified 🙄, I then got the Eu4 wiring loom fitted and then finally got the engine back in the chassis.

Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to connect the props and get the engine mounts tightened down and join the 2 halves back together Thumbs Up
