Just been told as of April 2018 I'll need EGR valves fitted
Hi guys, I need a bit of advise.
My Discovery 3 has a engine system fault.
Took it in to get looked at.
The guys said the computer is saying the right EGR valve is faulty.
Knowing I had blanking plates fitted and no EGR valves, he then said regardless of anything he did to correct this I'd need EGR valves fitted. Because as of April 2018 any vehicle that came from a manufacturer with EGR valves fitted must have them fitted or fail an MOT.
He said it would take a full day to fit these plus a Mass Airflow Sensor, around £1250!
I'm a bit skeptical now as I heard they take around 2 hour each side to fit.
Is this correct how many other people are going to be stung if this is true?
Cheers

At this moment in time, it’s only a visual inspection My D3 Build Thread

As Mikey says still a case of can't see then can't fail them even though it is fail.
But can a tester pass it if he knows they are missing.==================================

Surely you still have EGRs fitted, it's just that they don't work and are blanked off? As DM said, it's proposed to be a visual inspection which will confirm that your EGRs are there!
Guessing that anyone that removed the pipes up to the air intake will need to put them back over the blanking plates so that it 'looks' original but I doubt you also had the pipes removed when the EGRs were blanked, although some do remove them.
I think your garage is just trying to sting you for replacing the EGRs, is it the same garage that you would be likely to use for the MOT? I guess there might be an issue if the tester already knows that the EGRs are blanked?

AS above
On both counts...
I can see a big demand for used EGR link pipes soon. Going to have to keep a few sets spare, just in case My D3 Build Thread

Thanks for the replies!
I have no idea if the valves are still in place and just not connected or removed entirely.
Yes I did get it MOT'd there the last year.
So it's currently an MOT fail if they are not fitted but only a visual inspection.
Anyone know if this changes in April??
And does a whole days to fit them and the Mass Airflow sensor at £1250 including parts sound a bit steep to you guys?

Was wondering what happens if the same garage are undertaking a service or some remedial works and they plug their OCB tool in and can clearly see the EGR faults showing? Will that cause them to class this as a MOT fail later that day? D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo

If they can tell, tough. It's your car, it's your responsibility.

If you do get them reinstated, their quote can easily be almost halved...My D3 Build Thread

Did you have it blanked? It really isn't as straightforward as just unbolting the EGRs from the car. Blanking is relatively easy and inexpensive. Removing them entirely and making good what's left isn't. I would be very surprised if they were actually removed.

Take it elsewhere, don't give them your custom, best place to have an MOT is an MOT station that only does MOT's.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

and I ask,
if the car does not give a smoke fault, and gives the emissions within the limit corresponding to its own EURO X, why do they have to interfere in our EGRs... being blanked or not? or in other words, what legal basis does this interference have if we do not give a smoke fault?lost in translation!
