Kenya 4x4 Club - Ngong Challenge
A couple of months back I met up with a groups of 4x4 enthusiasts for some off-road fun. The disco did me proud in what was some very muddy conditions.

Salaam nyingi saana! Nice video........brings back memories.
I was in Kenya when LR put an early RR in to the EA Safari Rally. Failed at the first fence due to dirty fuel.
Murram Red should be on the Land Rover colour chart.
Much better to drive through than wet Black Cotton soil.

I was thinking they were ATR's as well, but couldn't be sure.
Don't be fooled by the relatively tame tread pattern of the ATR. Whilst they are brilliant on road, they're also very capable of it. Far more so than a pure "road tyre".
Saying that, even on standard fit road based tyres, the TR system of the D3/4 will allow you to traverse some pretty severe terrain.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I've run ATR myself in the past, I know they're good. My description of them as "road" is in comparison to the usual chunky ATs (or even MTs) that the rest seemed to be running.
I'd still expect a chunky AT to go further in mud than the ATR on the same vehicle. Otherwise, the ATR is a great tyre.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Yes black cotton soil is like nothing else I’ve come across!
Yeah the car is on the relative tame Pirelli ATR’s. So far they have done really well and on that trip really proved themselves. It did make me wonder how well the D4 would go on a full set of MT’s! It was the first time I’d met up with these guys, and to begin with I thought I was in over my head as most were running MT’s. Later some cars on AT’s arrived so I felt better, but in the end I needn’t worry.
One thing I did notice after a stretch of deep mud was one of the rear brakes steaming and a smell of hot brakes, I guess this is one disadvantage to not having locked diffs and relying on the TC.

I ran a set of Goodyear MTR's for a while on my D3. Heavy clay based mud could turn them and any other tyre into slicks very quickly.
I've yet to get stuck with ATR's (famous last words), but in very muddy conditions you definitely have more steering control and slide around less with MTR's.
You just need to think a bit more and make full use of the TR system with less aggressive tyres.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
