Restoring black plastic trim |
|
What do people recommend for restoration of the black plastic bumper / wheel arch etc. trims? I have used various products over the years with varying levels of success, so looking for some wisdom to guide me to something else!!

The first thing one has to realize is that nothing is permanent.
That being said, I’ve used Gtechniq C4 which I found to work fairly well. It made the completely gray and faded headlight washers several shades darker. Didn’t make them new, though. In the end I bought cairns blue adhesive caps and solved the problem with that for hopefully a very long time.

I use "Wood Silk" on my black wheel arches, bumper etc.
It's good enough for me on an 18 year old car.
It's easy to apply unlike the usual black trim restorers which you have to be careful with and it only costs around £1.30 a can in Asda.
Plus you can also do your wooden furniture with it I see no ships........

I've yet to try this - so take this advice with a massive grain of salt - but many plastics can be restored with a quick swipe of a blowtorch.
Check out some videos on youtube for the technique.

I have tried the hot air gun approach on black textured plastic, and on some it worked very well but it’s difficult if there are painted surfaces on the same part. It did work well on my original D3 textured wheel arches Must stop buying shiny toys....

I use carbon collective platinum trim, never used it on anything really faded but it lasted over 2 years on a mini we had.

Restoring Black Plastic Trim. |
|
I’m about to restore the external black plastic scuttle around the windscreen wipers. I’m going to be using Polytrol, about which I’ve heard some good reports.
I’ll do a before & after pic, and I hope it’s as good as the reports I’ve seen, as it costs about £21.00 from Amazon!
Watch this space….
