can keys 'lose' their programming?

One of my original keys has stopped working. I've taken it apart (the case was knackered anyway) and the battery voltage seems fine 3.12v , so I'm wondering if I can re-program it?

Key could only be programmed once, unless you reset the chip. You can get a cheap aftermarket one from AliExpress then program it.
