knock in steering rack

Hi,

few days ago I have noticed a knock in steering rack if I turn the steering
wheel little back and forth without running engine. Steering wheel stands straight of course.

With engine running I can't hear this. Not sure if it exists with engine running.

Normal or bad steering rack?

Thomas

Possibly lower steering column, common fault. If you decide to replace it then spend the extra money and fit a genuine Land Rover one as there are plenty of posts on here regarding problems with non-LR steering columns!
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

What do you mean with "lower steering column"?
The steering gear or the shaft?

It's worth checking your inner and outer track control arms too, although not aware of them causing a knock under acceleration.
 Cheers,

Gareth

My local 4x4 man says its a body off job to replace the lower steering column on the 2010 D4 SDV6, has anyone changed one with the cab on ?

I've changed several on D3's but not a D4.

Cheers

Simon.

thanks for the reply, i've ordered the part, should be with me tomorrow.

Just had a look at the job, whats the best way to get to the top bolt on the lower steering column UJ ? On the D3 its easy enough from above, but on the D4, theres a load of electronics and plaster covers around the brake master cylinder. Is access via the wheel arch viable ?

TIA

Simon.

Still possible from the top side even if you have start stop battery but much tighter so I suggest long extension on yer rachet and relevant socket

did mine that wat

puting the bolt back in is more tricky but nothing what black construction sticky tape cannot handle

good luck
G

Lower Steering column replaced on the D4, took about 3 hours, removed some of the covers from around the master cylinder as couldn't see a way of pulling the column back out, the plaster covers were actually quite easy to remove, 3 x 10mm nuts on the base and 2 small 8mm bolts on the electronics, then 5 plastic clips on the side of the plastic wall and lift out.

Now the steering wheel alignment is off so i need to work out which bolt to slacken to adjust it.. another day now as its just started raining.
