I feel sorry for you that it is still not solved..

Sorry for asking, but.. a spinning main bearing is one possible cause for big-end failure, but their can be more reasons for big-end failure.. blocked oil passages can be caused by pollution. Bad O-rings on suction pipe, mis use of silicon gasket fluid.. etc. Etc. Seen it all..

How did the big-end shells look? What is the wear pattern?
 Best regards
Harold

certainly seems to be coming from the bottom end, if it is not a big end then must be a main bearing perhaps, don't know what they sound like when they go.

The shells looked fine. Minimum wear and no signs of hot spots or any scoring. For some reason didn't think to take photos of them. Embarassed and only bits of metal I've found in sump was from the timing chain tensioner.
Might be a daft question but would a dodgy Injector cause the tapping noise?

Well, a leaking injector, can cause to much fuel /liquid staying in the piston crown (cylinder)
Causing to much pressure so pre detonation/knocking... that sounds horrible indeed..

But a IID should show it when a injector is way out of bandwidth normally... at least should give you a direction regarding the suspect injector...

Any idea if the icarsoft lr2 can be used for injector readings or does it need to be the iid?

Thanks

Sorry, I do not know the answer on that.. as I do not know the icarsoft..

I do know the IID and I can read the live injector values on it... (and the errors on them)
