Both my D3's have behaved like that on occasion. Sometimes a struggle to reverse of the sloped drive we have - engine almost stalls until you de-clutch and give it some wellie, then slip the clucth. Viscous fan going like the clappers. Then stops a few hundred yards up the road and all is good again.
May well be EGR issue, but it seems the default answer to every fault on the D3 on the forum.
Happy to be wrong (not that MickK will be) of course... just passing my observation over the last 5 odd years

Sure enough it was an EGR valve.
Got the offside done, a service, tailgate strut sorted and a new coolant bottle and fingers crossed thats me done for a while!!!
Running like a dream now!!!
