Lack of power when cold??? |
|
I have owned my 1st Disco for about 3 weeks now.....it was great in the snow, but have noticed a strange lack of power after starting it up from cold......When it was -5 I had to tick the engine over for about 5 minutes or so to defrost the windscreen before I set off.....so didn't notice the problem until the weather has warmed up!!!
It's a 2005 '05' SE, manual, with only 48K on it.
If it's cold it starts fine, as I pull away in 1st, it goes really slowly....so slow that I looked down to check I wasn't in the low ratio box. (It struggled to do 10MPH on the flat!!) The engine pulls really slowly, until the turbo cuts in at about 2250 RMP then it pushes you back into the seat....so fingers crossed thats not cabbaged!!!
When the engine is warmed up....after about 15 minutes of driving the problems seems to have gone.
Any suggestions?
There are no warning lights and no black smoke coming out of the back.....

looks as if all the neighbors are hooking up to your car before you move off in snow so they can get to work as well and when you finally reach 10-20 they release their tows

Its normal for the cooling fan to be running full pelt for a few seconds after cold start, this saps a lot of power. It will be accompanied by a pretty substantial roaring noise from the the engine, which will go away as the power comes in.
If this is what you are experiencing, don't worry, they all do it.

most diesels need a bit of time to warm up to give normal power, hence they should be driven gently to start with. end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

I agree, the 2250 RPMs suggests an EGR fault.

If it knocks you back into your seat >2000rpm and with no black smoke, then the turbo *should* be fine.
It definitely sounds like the EGR valves with no power at low revs.
Has anyone else read or noticed anything about the EGRs being more prone to sticking in low temperatures? As Mikey says, when they fail, they usually fail all the time.
Also I think -5°C is still a bit "warm" for diesel to start gelling/waxing and if it did, then it would be a general problem and therefore not allow the engine to work properly above 2000rpm....
If the EGRs fail on a 2005 model then they won't produce any error messages, so it would kind of tie in with your explanation of what is happening.
As you say you're in York, then it might be worth popping in to see Pete at Bell Auto Services as you're on his doorstep. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Cheers guys....so I wouldn't get a warning light on my 05 then?
Would a diagnostics check bring up the fault, and if so what number would it produce?
And lastly.....how much is this going to set me back....can't do it myself so would probably go to an independant gararge......

That is funny my V8 does exactly the same thing... when cold, when I start accelerating, it seems like it runs out of gas for a second then something kicks in and away it goes!!!!
It is not a engine specific problem then, if the diesel does it too...

That is definatly not normal - even if the weather was cold.

As slimer says - go and have a chat with Pete from BAS if he is local
