Yesterday, my father a friend and I went for our level one training at he SE LRE. To say that we were blown away was an understatement. The centre is on a 3500 acre estate in Ashford, Kent. It is a mixture of chalk and clay terrain, through open grassland and woodland. It is very flinty!
After the briefing session and checking our TDV6 HSE the 3 of us set off with our instructor Stan to the quarry. Here the car was driven by another instructor over a series of moguls to show how the car can carry on with 2 wheels in the air and the rigidity of the chassis was demonstrated by opening and closing doors.
We were then back in and driven around the obstacles that included side slopes, various drops and climbs & log roads. Then it was our go. We practiced here using different gears (on the command shift) and terrain response programs. It was great fun - but the first half a day whizzed past and it was time to stop for lunch at the hotel.
After lunch it was a quick refresh in the quarry and then out into the woods. Time was spent here risk assessing each obstacle and reading the terrain before driving it. Here again we tackled water, hills, tight turns that the cars power turned you through very tight turns. Several things struck me, the tyres soon filled up with the thick clay meaning that it was the cars own ability to set itself up that was getting us round. Just when you thought you were stuck the car would find someway of clawing itself out, which meant that you shouldn't give up too easily. The ease with which it tackled obstacles was amazing.
Stan explained the site was shut for some time in the winter due to snow of about 2' making it too dangerous to teach. He was out with the gamekeeper in a 110 with MTs and they could not get very far despite all their skill. Another instructor followed in a D3 and drove all round the estate on 18" GY Wranglers. The 110 couldn't even get through in the D3s tracks. He firmly believes the D3 is the best offroad car made.

So now you can come over on the 7th Aug to Tixover and do it yourself properly.

Hi BN, I've decided that I want to do Level 2, so I do need to practise, but Tixover, Bures and the rest seem a long way, a good 2 hour drive. We have one near home, but I'm told that there is a lot of undergrowth I don't really want to scratch it! So I'll be looking for quarries or open greenlanes such as the day on Salisbury plain I saw advertised.
What really shocked me was how few people take the half day up, I learnt so much. Did you know you can do the seat belt trick with the TC? Don't know why you'd want to but there you go!

Pelyma, there is no undergrowth on the courses that we will be running. Even if it rains, we have alternatives to avoid serious mud. There are so many routes at Tixover, from tame to absolutley violent rock faces, from smooth surface to sand and rough. If I could work out the posting of pictures, I have some that would help, but I will send them to the guys attending now.
I know of a couple in your region and can get some good deals, but lets get this one going first. I actually work at Crowthorne Research, MIRA, Leyland and the military tracks near Lyne. I used to be able to get access to the Foden tracks, but they are sadly closed. The Lyne tracks can be hired, but they are very military and whilst the D3 could easily cope, it is rough.

Tixover will be worth the drive. It'll be almost as long for me and we can meet up on the way if you like.
Go on, make the trip, you know you want to  and you get to meet us all too

Seat belt trick ??? With the Traction Control ??
Sorry but only seat belt trick I know is how to turn off the warning bleeps.

Simon yes the same style of trick works with the brakes to switch of TC! Don't know why any one would want to. The LRE guys seem to be adamant that the preheater doesn't work and even if our method does work it isn't work  DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
