Land Rover Half Engine Query

I've just had my engine (SDV6) rebuilt following a spun-bearing incident (Big-end!)
I opted to have a LR supplied new half-engine and rebuild up from my old engine. Running sweetly at the moment, good job (but long one !) by my local indy.

My query is, I presume the new half-engines come off the LR assembly line and therefore are current spec (whatever that is !). Is anyone aware of LR having made any modifications to the crankshaft or the bearing location issue to overcome the obvious technical faults in those areas.

If not, and these same blocks are , presumably, being used to build up the D5 V6 diesel is Land Rover continuing to store up problems for itself in the future and more personally do I still have a chance that my brand-new block could suffer bearing or crankshaft failure at some indeterminate time in the future !!

I await the discussion Thumbs Up

If you don't mind me asking.

How much did you pay for the block?
What warranty did it come with?

It’s only a problem for LR if the engine fails in the first 3 years, after that they don’t give a stuff. Thumbs Up

Price for block was £4650 + VAT with a two year warranty.

Whether the warranty would cover labour costs for rebuilding...…..!

They are made by Ford under contract until 2020 ..by then JLR will have their own suite of engines.

Support is very hit and miss in the sense that goodwill after warranty really depends on how nice you are and how the motors have been looked after e.g. FLRSH etc

So can I presume they have made no substantial improvements to address the problems ?

Could it be to make changes would be to admit a problem leading to liabilities Sad

It's been tinkered with and incidences appear to diminish on later engines ...but both parties can't wait for the contract to end tbh

Peeps talk about changes made in 2012 but that doesn’t seem to have much effect as engines are going bada bing, bada boom we’ll after that. Thumbs Up ISTBC but I haven’t heard of any changes for the D5 so will be interesting to see how that progresses. Will keep them busy once the owners get bored with oil dilution issues, suspension failures, infotainment fun & games and towbar woes. All while remembering how much they paid. Whistle Whistle

How much did the labour come to for the rebuild?

16 + 17MY engines are still suffering failures in the 405/494 models

Not heard of a D5 or Velar failure as yet though...

Didn’t someone on here say a D5 engine had failed at 700 miles just after delivery on a trip to Italy? Can’t find it though. Embarassed

Twice now I have seen brand new VWs driving on the road (not yet registered) and still protection on all the paint work doing 20 in 50 mph with hazzards on.

When they can they stop in a lay-by they do.

Is this part of the running in procedure? Rolling Eyes
Have they not put enough fuel in at the factory ?

A design fault?
Are they speed limited in delivery mode Laughing bloody dangerous if that is what they are doing cuz it's about 9miles from the new car storage place.
More than half at 50 mph roads
