Last Registered D4’s

Our D4 hits it’s 3rd birthday in June and as time seems to fly by these days I’m thinking over my options.

SWMBO is still favouring a 7 seat option which narrows the field somewhat.

Views on aftermarket warranties seem varied, for every positive review there seem to be 2 negatives. Although in June ours will be on approximately 25k miles so the best cover should be available.

The D5 just isn’t doing it for us, if it was £45k I’d probably buy one but LR’s current pricing policy just takes it off our list in a nano second.

But having spent a good few hours viewing the Autotrader web site spotted many low mileage 2016 D4’s for sale, I’m just not sure what month they stopped making them. March/April probably not worth the hassle of changing but October/November would give me another 18 months or so of ‘proper’ warrantied D4 ownership.

One things for sure I’m not keeping my present one and relying on Lady Luck.

Have a look at WD's Luxury Care, prob. closest thing to original 3 year warranty. Re last of the D4s, my folks got one of the last of them in Sept 16, Landmark version. It only has 8k miles on it. Shocked Shocked

I’ll take a look at the Lux Care.

September gets another year and a bit I guess.

It will probably come down to the cost to change, which on past experiences will probably mean mines worth nothing whilst the slightly newer one is the best thing since sliced bread 😏

The D4 ended production in September 2016, while much of the remaining unsold stock was pre-registered sometime around October 2016.

While I can completely understand that you might be keen to get the best late D4 you can get your hands on (especially considering the alternative!), if yours is one owner car, with a completely known history and very low mileage, I’d be tempted to hang on to it, especially as WD offers fairly decent policies for those with <60,000 miles.

to be fair i am happy with my WD policy even at 84k miles. They seem to give a good discount.

Just to be clear...

You have a three year old vehicle with 25k on the clock and you are worried about major mechanical failure?

Slim chance of failure I know, but there’s been a fair few examples of chatastrophic failure on here to make some form of insurance seem advisable.

Whether that’s with an aftermarket warranty or a new car seems to be the way forward, just weighing up the best options.

12 years old and 185k miles, pah - positively reliable. I killed mine at 166k miles and 11 1/2 years. Just not in quite as spectacular a manner!! Laughing Laughing

The insurers gave me £6250. Considering there wasn't a straight unblemished panel on it due to green laning I was rather pleased!

I found a replacement a year younger with 102k on it and a bulletproof history for £6800. Will be after a D4 at the end of the year. House shopping first and that has become eye wateringly expensive Big Cry

If it was like ‘the good old days’ when I DIY’d an engine swap on my 2ltr Cortina for about £100 I’d take a chance.

But as somehow the cost on a D4 engine swap seems to have gone north of £10k and I no longer have the required skills to perform such a task (or the will to be honest) I’m looking for a more relaxing ownership going forward.

But as most know on here, it’s a LR so it’s a bit like looking for the holy grail Neutral

What are the lease options like on a D5? With the mileage you appear to be doing maybe this is an option for you?

If you still need 7 seats but only occasional use then why not lease a Skoda Kodiaq?

We lease all SWMBO's cars and have just got a Skoda Karoq SE-L on order. There are some great lease deals out there. Thumbs Up

Leasing is an option, the only draw back being that the best deals are usually over 36 months and the opt out clauses are very punitive. Should circumstances change or you just don’t like it, there’s not much you can do.

Where as if your using normal HP as long as you’ve put down a sizeable deposit you have some room for manoeuvre.

There are some exceptions, I once leased a Jeep Commander 5.7 Hemi on a 12 month deal for £200+vat per month. Heavily subsidised by Jeep because nobody would buy one. Worth it just for the fantastic engine Thumbs Up
