Latest MHEV Vs 306 SD - anyone tried both ?

Hi, I'm contemplating a Disco 5, have looked at the MHEV cars, seen a 250 which I may be able to access in the next few months. However, I'm also looking at late SD306 cars and I noted that the 306 has more power (obviously given it's quoted as 250 Vs 306) but also nearly 100lb ft more of torque. I like a high torque 'lazy' engine so got to thinking if the 306 may be the better option ?

Has anyone tried both, any views ?

thanks.

D300

I was looking for a d300 defender and liked the d300 engine - great around town, torquey & powerful sub 50/60mph but a little lacking at motorway speeds compared with the 306 sdv6.

Was royally faffed about by 2 defender dealers & so ended up with a 306 sdv6 D5. Prior to looking for the Defender, I had wanted to order my own new d300 D5 but I was put off by the options I had to deselect owing to the components crisis (as well as extended wait times). The figures for the 306 sdv6 are generally better than the Mhev d300 - the d300 largely exists as the licence with ford has expired for the sdv6. I like the sdv6, it’s well tested & very capable. I’m going to have a remap done tomorrow too (I did a d4 tdv6 years ago & was happy with the difference).

I had a SD6 D5 for 3 years and changed to a new D300 D5 in October.

The D300 feels a little lazier in it's throttle response but is actually quicker 0-60 and used about 10% less fuel. My SD6 has adaptive dynamics as an option which is now standard on new D5s so I expected the handling to be the same but it isn't. The D300 is much more stable when cornering. I have run both cars on exactly the same 20" GGAT3s so it is a direct comparison.

The PiviPro system is also a big improvement on the Incontrol system.

The SD6 is good, especially with adaptive dynamics as an option but the D300 is better (if you can find one).

Literally just arrived back in the new (to me !) Disco. Anniversary edition SD6, love it. I did think the latest interior in the D300 was better, but not worth an unknown wait and an extra £20k, so very pleased with the purchase.... Cruises very well, relaxed at 70 / 80 mph and pulls well when needed. Super smooth engine as well. Thanks for your replies, great to get views on this.

The D300 is far superior to the Ford engine and JLR gave Ford notice, not the other way round….

Just wondering, did you get the remap done ? If so, who did it, are you happy with it ?
