Leaving the D4 parked up for 4/5 months

So I am going away again with work for a while. Its going to be parked in the corner of the drive out of the way.

What would you say are some of the best things to do for the time i'm away?

I am going to have the Ctek charger plugged in via the tow electrics. Is it best to have it in all the time or once a week for a charge?

I was thinking of also a solar panel charger, maybe instead of the Ctek?

My better half doesn't want to drive it as she is used to her smaller car. (fair enough in London i suppose!)

Any other useful thoughts?

Thanks Chaps Thumbs Up

inflat tyres at 3,5 - 4 bar and leave the Ctek always connected....

Ask to your wife to start up the engine once a month and leave the engine running 4 - 5 mins and change the engine oil when you return home (also check the engine air filter)

if the 4 or 5 months are in winter, sprays silicone oil on all seals (doors, etc. etc.)

+1 ^

Except I wouldn't bother starting it at all. My mind says that it would not warm up properly, and there is a risk of condensation forming in the engine and/or oil. I know my brother knackered his Porsche engine by only doing very short journeys, the oil emulsified and caused problems. 5 months is nothing, it will be fine.

Where are you off to Jason? sounds exciting!

50% Correct! but I forgot to write: "Change the oil when you return home"

If the stop is in winter the cilinder cast iron (internal side/piston side) should start oxidation.....

Unless it's had a very recent oil & filter change I would do this before leaving the car.

I'm not going to argue with Gareth, but I don't agree with him.

IMHO it would be best for the car to be started & run for at least 20 miles once a month. During this run I would exercise the suspension, selecting off-road & access height, and I would use low range for a hundred or so yards.

It won’t take any harm, many vehicles are on forecourts for longer periods, shade is preferred to full sun, if you don’t have any shade and have got tinted rear windows park it with them facing the midday sun or cover the windscreen and protect the tyres from midday sun.
Unless the engine is run long enough to reach full operating temp don’t run it, running at tick over will do more harm than good.
Make sure it is taxed to cover the period or SORN or you will come home to an hefty fine.

that's what i was going to suggest too. My Subaru goes off the road for 6 months every winter. It gets a 10 - 15 minute run every 2 weeks and moved out of the garage to the end of the drive once a month so that everything sits in a slightly different place. been doing this for 9 years and never had to replace anything out of the ordinary

If it's not going to be moved at all, I'd consider having it up off the ground.

As above, get someone to drive it for half an hour every fortnight or less. Thumbs Up

Thanks all,

Some useful info there.

So i'll be leaving it plugged into the Ctek all the time.
Not sure if i'll get anyone to be able to drive it just yet. (but will see)
I'll up the pressure in the tyres.
Just had a recent service and only done 1.5k since or so, so i think the oil will be fine.
