LED brake bulbs

A work colleague has just told me one of my brake lights is out, so I think it's time to investigate the LED option.

Have looked at the threads, but just want to be sure I get the right ones, as I'm a bit confused as to which are the right ones. Can someone point me at the right ones in a "These ones, you idiot" kind of a way.

The orginal thread referred to U38048R bulbs which are no longer listed on the site - would the U38035R (380) do the job?

I too have a tail light bulb gone and would like to change the both to LEDs

The problem with them TG is that they don't use the reflector, so you've got a small red spot in the middle which is harder to see than the nice full glow of the reflector. It's very obvious in some pictures from D3 events just how hard to see these leds are.

simka actually PM'd me about the choices, and with U38048R gone, it's a bit of a problem. I wonder if several people emailed ultra leds, would they restock them?

The alternatives seem to be http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/u38020r-ultra-t...-1094.html
. Similar design to the 48 led version, so will make good use of the reflector.

I'm also curious about this exotic looking led - http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/u3803hr380-3wat...-1404.html but I'm not sure how good it'd be in a D3 without trying it!

Hmm.. £18 each is quite a lot though. I can buy 10 standard bulbs for that price. If I do go for standard bulbs rather than LEDs, can somebody confirm if they are red or clear bulbs? - presumably clear. I would take the lamp apart to see, but that would mean taking the lamp guards off.... a job I can only be arsed with doing the once to put the new bulb in.

The standard bulbs are clear.

You can get the white LED version (the 'incorrect' link I sent you the first time) for £9.99 each - that's the same price the 48LED version used to be. I'm not sure of the real world difference with the red version though.

You should go for red LEDs as unlike red incandescent globes they only put out the red part of the spectrum. If you put in white you will have less red being emitted, the rest will be fitered out by the lense.

Would this one fit? U3803HR(380) 3Watt Cree Ultra High Bright 6- 30V S & T Bulb
http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/u3803hr380-3wat...-1404.html

Listed as brightest. What is the viewing angle of this Cree Led? (will the reflector be in range?)

It may be bright, but the amount of light spilling on to the reflector will be low. The reflector design works very well with multi-LED arrays where there are LEDs clustered along the side of unit, like the one bkehoe pointed to above. These most closely mimic the light spread of a normal incandescent lamp.

With single-point light sources you just get a very bright dot that would be lost in the overall reflector/lens.

Has anyone ordered LED replacements for their stop lights recently?

I see ultraleds haven't reinstated the U38048R LEDs, and the concensus above is to go for U38020R. Has anyone got these, and if so how are they finding them?
