With them both sadly out of production, I’ve defected to a FF 😁

Ok it’s been almost a week since taking delivery of the Velar but due to work today is the first chance I’ve had to take it out for a good run.

So, what’s it like?

Firstly the 2.0 240 ingenium engine, I thought I would be a bit underwhelmed by it having had the V6 in various Discos for the past couple of years but I’m pretty pleased with it. It’s perky enough goes when it needs to and once warmed up it’s difficult to tell it’s a 4 cylinder until you give it a bit of beans then you get a bit of gruffness.

Inside though it’s a nice place to be and feels more like a baby Range Rover than the Evoque ever could. It’s very hushed, not a lot of wind noise or tyre roar. Sitting behind the wheel is comfortable, the digital dash is great, spend more time playing around trying to find the perfect setting. Now the dual touch screens are nice but not easy to use on the move but fine when stationary, it could really do with some sort of feedback when a function is pressed. But my main bug bare is finger prints, it’s a nightmare trying to keep it clean.

The Pro infotainment system is pretty good, so far everything is working as it should. I’ve still to get a data sim so haven’t tried out the live stuff. Played with the apps but there’s nothing really of any major use to me on the apps. The navigation system looks a lot better than the standard system in the D5 and so far seems pretty reliable.

Space in the rear is ok, it’s not fantastic, does feel slightly claustrophobic, especially as I have the R-Dynamic which comes with the black headliner, but it’s comfortable enough for two, three would be a bit uncomfortable for long periods of time. The boot is big enough for my needs, it’s a reasonable size for a car in this class, the low roofline eats into the space. Gesture tailgate, that’s a chore, I just can’t get it to work. Everyone else tries it, it works, even the cat walking underneath the car can open it. So I’ve given up with it.

The overall drive and experience is brilliant, as said the 2.0 240 is fine, it has the parallel sequential turbo whereas the 180 doesn’t. My test drive was done on one riding on air, which IMO is worth spending the £1.5k on. My ones running on the standard coil springs which is good but with the 20” wheels can be a bit harsh and crash over potholes. On smooth roads it’s fine but the air just gives it a bit more of a Range Rover feel. Handling is great, really fun on country roads, put it in dynamic mode and sport and it comes alive. Had it over a boggy bit ground yesterday, worked as a LR should, in and it with no fuss.

Yes it’s overpriced, yes I could’ve got an F-Pace cheaper, would I recommend the Velar? Yes, would I buy another? Definitely. As with the D5, the Velar will have its lovers and it’s haters, but for me, it’s the perfect little Range Rover.

Thanks for the Velar update. One thing I love on the full size Discos is the air suspension. Have had Disco Sports as loan cars and struggle with the fidgety ride. Shame they don’t offer air springs as an option.

Oh the joys of air suspension! I remember getting in a D4 for the first time ( right after the DS was launched) and playing with the air suspension; it was like getting my sorely, sorely, missed Citroen XM Estate back! Very Happy

Height adjustment, self levelling, flood protection, smooth ride - lovely Thumbs Up

As D&D says, fortunately it’s available, at a price! But it’s only what the Germans and Swedes do and people seem to think that they can do no wrong Rolling Eyes

First issue

Live Services don't work or the web browser. A quick look on Topix shows an outstanding campaign for this Rolling Eyes

so trip to the dealers. Not important features to me but they should work. At least it makes a change from the service warning that was on the D5 Laughing

I’m 4 months and 11,200 miles in on the FF and I’ve not even tried the Live Services / web browser yet! Laughing

Does it come with the “Remote” App and tracker as well? That really is useful Thumbs Up
