As far as I know, all car manufacturers do.... as they do with fuel lines etc.
That's the way I remember it from working on them anyway

Under bonnet area, not visible until the plastic covers were removed.
I'm hoping to get some pics when I go to look later this week.

What! your'e saying that a mouse (or similar) eat the wiring
Over here in Germany, it is usually claimed that the Marder (= marten / related to the weasel) is the main culprit for this sort of thing. There are various gadgets on the market as a defence: electric ultrasonic buzzing things, a paste or a quaintly named spray. For those who can read German, these are all described in the link http://www.philognosie.net/index.php/article/articleview/191/ . There doesn't seem to be any guarantee of success, though.
However, since it seems that the trouble comes after the beasts have left their mark on the car (like dogs), it is also suggested that the vehicle and where it stands should be thoroughly washed down.

Photo's for your perusal (see my gallery for full size)
Managed to get some v.quick snaps of the rejcted D3's under bonnet
You need to look really closely in the flesh to see the nicks in the wiring! The circled areas are the ramains of chewed insulation.
This shows more of the remains of their activity, many wires have been chewed. The dealer is going thru it with a fine tooth comb as the pollen filter has been attacked, so there is a possibility they got in the car, as it has probs with the interior lighting.
Didn't take any pics of the interior but most of the dash is out as they are checking wire by wire. 8hr labour so far, and no-one knows who's paying as it's not a manufacturing defect, or warranty, and I've rejected it so they aren't claiming on my insurance!

I can testify to the gnawing powers of mice - I had an infestation in the garage where I stored my old car, so being lazy, I just put down some warfarin-laded grain.
Big mistake; in its thirst craze, it drowned by falling into the windscreen fluid bottle (glass jar with open vented lid) but not before the little blighter had chomped through the rigid fuel line (about 3mm thick).
When I found rodent droppings in my wife's car the next month, the humane trap went in and the culprit was carried out and released into a field.Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana
