lights on but no warning light
travelling in mixed weather today it reminded me that with auto lights on the HSE they can be off in gloomy rainy weather when you would prefer them on but there is no warning light on the dash to tell you either way which defies convention on every single car i have ever owned, who else finds this irritating.? I do! The only way you can tell is the dashboard panel dims when the lights are on but that can be difficult to tell whether it's dim or bright.
I've also been caught out by the fact that the main-beam indicator can be hidden by the steering wheel - I've been flashed several times during early mornings in the spring when it was dark enough for the lights to come on automatically, yet light enough that you can't tell if the lights are on main beam or notNow an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. is this a design failure, oversight or just plain dumb? i am suprised that there is no legal requirement (like fog light on warning lamps) or is there??TDV6 HSE Buckingham Blue and still smiling

It does have fog light on warning indicator lights, just lacks headlamp/sidelights on indicator - apart from the info read out on the dash going dim!Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

I agree, I find it very irritating that LR have not put a warning light on the dash. Especially as sometimes the auto lights come on in the daylight and the first you know about it is when you see the reflection of your lights on the car in front.1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

[quote="PCH"]It is certainly a oversight in my opinion.
During the day in fog or rain I turn the lights to manual to ensure they are on. The auto lights you cannot trust in these circumstances.
kind of defeats the purpose of "auto" if you cant just rely on them... TDV6 HSE Buckingham Blue and still smiling

The only legal requirement in the UK for 'tell-tale' warning lights for vehicle lighting are as follows:
Main (full) beam
Rear fog light
Hazard indicators
Side indicators

I think the sensitivity of the auto lights is more of an issue than that of a warning light. They do tend to come on in relatively bright conditions and perhaps this deserves slight adjustment.
However, if they came on and your main beam was set on, then the main beam 'tell-tale' will illuminate (and I'm sure others on the road will let you know too). Therefore this is a warning light.
Dipped beam should really make no difference to you or others during the day as there is no harm to be done by them being on, and nothing illegal.
Another thing to consider is that when you turn on your lights manually ....there is no warning light...and this is because no warning is required at that time ....a light would be just for convenience.
Overall, what I'm saying is that it is an 'Automatic' system afterall and you do have a choice to switch it to that setting or not - if it becomes that much of a 'pain in the harris' ....just switch them to manual or off 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I've only just thought about this and yes its daft - even with the automatic lights.
My last vehicle also had automatic lights and it DID have the usual 'lights on' indicator.
Like others have commented - spotting the info display going dim is the only obvious way of spotting it.Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

What I'm saying Steve is who cares ?..... the dipped lights coming on and off is only the system reacting to the light levels as it is designed to do.
Its doing nothing that should adversly affect you or others - What difference is a warning light going to make? The fact that they are lights on or off should make no difference surely 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Another problem, although partly my fault. I came up behind a van on a slightly overcast day, and as I got close the autolights switched on. Unfortunately, they'd been left on full-beam after I'd flashed to give way to someone, so I quickly put them back to dipped beam. The van driver took this as me flashing him, and there was a 'slight' road rage incident.
I can never 'feel' the click where the stalk engages full beam.
