Do you like the D4 rotary shift?

.. in my opinion the rotary shift is the only thing that I hate on my D4.

Land Rover, too, seems don't have clear ideas on this point and, after Range Sport, has just went back on new Discovery SVX for which returned to the classic and much more instinctive shift lever.

I would be very curious to know what you think on this point.

My D4 is my first automatic, and it has the rotary shift, so I have nothing to compare against. However, I have found it to be absolutely fine to use.

You may find your answers here:

Ignore the title of the thread and read beyond the first page because it got pretty evenly divided (and equally strongly felt) replies.

Personally, having used both types, I much prefer the rotary selector / paddle shift combination on the D4 to the BMW look-a-like system on the RRS. Is this an attempt to take sales from competitors by being more like them, rather than having the confidence to stand by a design feature that appears to be uniquely JLR?

I think after seeing ending cars down from the top of the car parkings and finishing in the home garden pools they will have realized that that rotary shift is not in the reach of everyone and everyone

There is no mechanical feedback from the rotary dial as to what position it is in. The user has to shift their vision from the road to look way down and this takes a dangerous amount of time. There is an indicator on the dash hisplay which is obscured by the wheel rim for people of a particular height.

So yet another design by someone who does not have to use it.

On the contrary; the knob clicks through each position and needs a deliberative action to go into Sport. Other than that, it’s all the way left for Park, all the way right for Drive and one click in from the left for Reverse. This has to be one of the simplest things in the car to use!

How do users who struggle with this get on with navigating around the multiple safety interlocks on the the BMW clone lever?

It's not to difficult to learn the sequence of gears using the rotary knob.

I've only driven an 8 speeder for a couple of hours, kind of got used to it. One difference cf the 6 speed is very poor slow speed control, eg moving around on a sloping drive. Very lurchy, 6 speeder is much better.

I also made the mistake of trying out the paddles on the 8 spd, then found i couldn't get back to normal without switching it from D to N then back to D. All on the hoof. How are you supposed to get it out of flappy paddle mode without taking it out of drive?

Or switch it into Sport and back again, at least don't loose drive (compared to switching to N)

In my opinion the discussion should not be done! You are underestimating a thing!
When Land Rover presents the Discovery SVX and declares that it abandons the rotary knob and goes back because the shift lever is more maneuverable (if you don't believe me, read the press release of the new Discovery SVX) at my country we call this "confession of guilty" by Land Rover

After this, there is nothing to be discussed because Land Rover told that the shift lever is better!

Land Rover choose the rotary knob only for a design reason: never a choice have been so stupid and irrational.

Mine just reverts back to normal D automatically after 10-20 seconds if the paddles aren't touched again. Much prefer the rotary knob and paddles Thumbs Up

Yep, it will do that as well Thumbs Up ...no doubt del would have been held in a gear he didn't want though and 20 seconds is a long time Laughing
