List of essential (and non-essential) things to take offroad |
|
As I was packing my vehicle for the latest D3.co.uk trundle around the muddy parts of the Peaks I wished I had a list of all the essential (and non-essential) things to take offroad. I know we need ropes, shackles, jack, spare wheels, radios, etc, but then there's all the other stuff I didn't take. e.g. gloves, handwipes, cuddly toy etc. The list could go on...
Has anyone done such a list? If not, shall we create one? Maybe even "sticky" the result in Events to help the less experienced (i.e. me) prepare for offroad.
best regards

Thanks Gareth. Found it...
General guidance (thanks to 10forcash for a previous posting http://disco3.web-rover.co.uk/forum/topic2955-90.html)) I've added a couple of my own.
All vehicles should carry the following as a minimum
* Fire extinguisher
* First - aid kit
* Drinking water
* Serviceable spare wheel
* Jack, wheelbrace, locking wheel nut tool
* PMR or XTN446 radio (s)
* Mobile phone
* Waterproof jacket (s)
* Warm clothing
* Spade or shovel
* Decent pair of boots that you can drive in
It is recommended that the following also be carried, but is not essential
* Recovery strop, rated at least 4.5 tonnes
* Bow shackles, rated at least 4.5 tonnes
* Heavy - duty gloves
* Spade or shovel
* Bow-saw for overhanging branches
* Lopping shears to cut back brambles etc
* Hand-wipes (in case you come into contact with oily bits)
Vehicle preparation
Although most of this is common sense, it's worth repeating as an aide memoir
* Check all fluid levels are up to the maximum, particularly engine oil, prolonged operating at angles can cause oil starvation should the level be marginal
* Check tyre pressures are correct and appropriate for the expected vehicle load, check tyres for physical damage, although small cuts are of little consequence in day to day use, they can result in a puncture when stressed during off road driving.
* Ensure all tyres have valve caps
* The spare tyre should be inflated to the maximum rear tyre pressure
* Ensure that you have some form of load restraint, even small items can cause damage or injuries so make sure that you have sufficient secure storage.
* Check before and after driving that all windows, external mirrors, lights and index plates are clean, 'wet-wipes' are ideal for this, also ensure you have a bin bag to hold all the waste wet wipes, drinks containers, sweet wrappers etc.
* Ensure that you have some cash available,
* Wear seat belts. It is also advisable to keep windows closed when moving to prevent stones, mud or branches causing damage or injury.
A note on PMR radios
'Binatone' and other super - cheap radios are more of a liability than a communication device, if you don't already have some radios the Motorola T5xxx series are recommended or if you're feeling flush, the Motorola XTN446 are the mutts nuts - at a price..
Make sure you know how they operate, including how to change channel and don't forget your charger and spare batteries! All opinions expressed in this posting are my own and are not necessarily those of someone who knows what they are talking about.

And baby wipes - wonderful things fro wiping up any stray mess whilst off road Assuming the condoms are to protect any water damageable goods like gun barrels, phone etc.

Well... the condom will not stop a bullet (as far as I am aware) but sure as hell stops the tadpoles.

I wouldn't shoot a gun with something over the end, I've seen what a little mud or snow can do Probably fine but you go first DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
