Locking Rear Diff - Oil Seal Replacement |
|
Ive got a leak from my locking rear diff on the RHS half shaft seal so I thought i would buy a litre of oil just to keep topped up so it doesnt run dry until I can get the seal changed. Will be off on the Wild West weekend tonight so the diff could get a bit of a workout
£20 a litre - Castrol Differential SAF Carbon MOD PLUS. (SAE 75W-90 GL5)
any ideas where I can get it a tad cheaper
to drain and refill with the correct volume I need 1.6 litres Duncan

I think LR sell it for £18 ltr but it is very expencive stuff so go careful when filling so as not to spill any "UNDERSTEER" ---is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" -is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" ------------is how far you take the fence with you.

Thanks TLO,
thats about what I paid.
When I said a tad cheaper I was hoping for £9.99 a litre or less (I live in hope....)
I might try and get it done under extended warranty - or is that classed as wear and tear Duncan

Has anyone changed the seal on a rear diff yet.
I go on holiday next thursday and need to get it done asap.
I'll see if dealer can do it, if not i might do it myself this weekend if its easy. ive looked on the GTR but would prefer some disco3 instructions
I undid the filler plug last night and a load of murky oil poured out , which would suggest the diff if full of water Duncan

as mines done nearly 100,000 miles the only half decent warranty was LR Select and I'm starting to wish I hadnt bought it now. They dont cover wear and tear, and on a 3 year old car that could apply to everything.... Duncan

NOt wear and tear. Known issue. Diffs were sealed with a substance that reacted with the diff oil which then caused a breakdown in the seals (more common in front diff). See if the dealer can get a contribution from LR and ask dealer to tell LR select of the reson for failure. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

thanks, do you have a TSB nos and some details. the car is over 3 years old and 100k miles, plus the seal was covered in clay/mud/sand . The LHS one was OK though, just the RHS was knackered Duncan

At that mileage you would be looking at LR being nice to you. But the insurance should pay up if the fault is known to be caused by something other than wear.

From TFC in the above thread, is your before this VIN?
Could be, get a torch & check the output shaft seals for signs of leakage (you can see them from the wheelarch with the steering on full lock) what sort of noise on full lock? as mentioned above, a drain of the diff oil will reveal any contamination or metallic debris. There was a mention of the rear diffs suffering contamination due to the paint used on the castings flaking off, as far as i'm aware this doesn't apply to the front diff though
Edit: Nope, front diff's as well
Quote:
Noise (Whine or humming) from the front or rear differential. A minor oil leak may be evident with possible debris in oil. Oil will be black in color.
Cause: The casing black paint / sealer degrades, detaches and contaminates the oil.
This results in the oil overheating which results in oil seal leaks and bearing noise.
Safe from VIN LA8A451595
Not sure what the TSB number is. Others with beter search ability than me may be able to find it. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
