Looking for Green Lane options around Kirkby Stephen / A66

Well the G4 has just been serviced thanks to Disco Mikey Thumbs Up and is in need of a wee trip.
Planning a stop at England’s highest pub, just south of the A66, east of Kirkby Stephen.
Looks like there might be a few off road options and wondered if anyone on here could give any recommendations....?

There's actually no green lanes in the area surrounding the Tan Hill pub. If you want to stop there you'll have a long detour away from the lanes.

There's lots of green lanes a bit further south in the Dales....I was just thinking that it was about time to arrange another day out - just struggling to find a good day.

There's a nice lane just south of Kirkby Stephen which goes above Mallerstang past the water cut sculpture

Yes, it's clearly marked on the OS maps as a Byway Open to All Traffic. It starts from and runs parallel to the B6259 north of Hawes. However, from Hell Gill Bridge, you must go down to Shaw Paddock. You can't use the continuation south along the "High Way" as it's closed by a TRO (and the gateways are only 4ft wide along it anyway).

Yes the bridge at Hell Gill is rather tight in a Discovery and if you go across it stop and have a look over the side of the bridge, it's a long way down Laughing

The ruts from the Water Cut to Hell Gill Bridge are getting a bit (rather a lot actually) deep. You have been warned!

Yes, a standard D3 or D4 will cope fine along there.....but.....road tyre sidewalls seem to be rather vulnerable to damage Whistle

I don't really know the Durham area. I usually get out laning in the Yorkshire Dales about half a dozen times a year including a couple arranged via this forum.

Thanks Ian, I liked the look of the Mallerstang lane but we didn’t make it there - so it’s filed away for next time.
What we did find was a water splash....

See the bridge in the background..... well the lady living in the adjacent mill said it was completely under water during storm Desmond Shocked

Cracking photos, you certainly got some nice weather for your trip Thumbs Up
Not been over that way, it’s not that far from me either, where is the water splash at?

If your down that way again and your happy to have someone tag along give me a shout, would be interested in doing the lane suggested earlier in the thread.

Thanks for that. Always better to go off road with others. I’ll let you know when I’m down that way again...
