The key should not be removeable until the towbar is locked into position.
I for one "lost" my towbar not long after the first post on this subject, describing the removal process. Put it down to coincidence, until I turned up at my dealer ready to part with several hundred quid for a replacement. To be met with the fact that 2 or 3 others were in on that day alone for new ones, and a few more in the previous days.
Dealer commented that they had had none stolen since 2005 then about 5-6 in less than a week. Spooky "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Its holiday season so I guess more are fitted so more can be nicked. Moral of that story is remove it whenever its not in use AND chain any trailer to the chassis as a precaution. Cheers

Does anybody know if you can get spare keys for the removable tow bar - I assume you probably can as there is a number on the lock itself (1019)??
Just take it to Bluewater" the local scum thieves will have that off for you in a few seconds.

Spooky that this is at the top of the list... Especially as it was so long ago that the conversation originally started!!
I too have just purchased my first Disco 3 and have no keys for the lock... However, though I'm not going to ask for help removing the blasted thing, I have a different question...!
The green locking mechanism is not attached to the tow bar. The tow bar has the red disc and metal bar protruding and the green locking mechanism was loose in the car...! Can anyone tell me if it is safe to use or if it can be fixed, aside from having to replace the locking mechanism...?
If anyone is on the Wirral/Chester who wants to check I have a genuine car then feel free to pop over and teach my how to use my new toy!!

Little bit of a good news bad news situation today then...
Turns out I now know exactly how easy it is to nick these things... No wonder everyone is recommending taking them off when not in use and stowing them inside the car. Good idea... Take this advice!!
Turns out my tow bar at is secure for towing, and if anyone manages to pinch it then they deserve a medal... I'd be interested to know when this one was last removed, and indeed how to get the tow bar off myself as it feels very very stuck! Lock isn't an issue now, as it turns out that the key isn't lost, it is snapped off into the lock, hence why the green handle has been removed from my car.
Guess I'd best not give out the address where I live until I get a new locking handle sorted!!

I have just got my discovery 3 hse, and that has come with no keys for the tow bar or the roof rails !
I can probably get a new lock for the tow bar from eBay, but I don't know whether you can get replacement keys for the genuine roofbars.
Maybe someone here can enlighten me ?

I have the same problem with the roof bars on mine, I cant find any numbers on the locks so I may have to drill the locks out on mine Cheers Skippy.

Luckily I have found numbers on the locks on my roofbars and apparently although badged as Land Rover bars they are actually made by Thule and there are locksmiths on eBay who recognise these numbers and can cut me some keys.

Hi, just wondering if the D3 solution applies to D4 too and if so what is the solution? Happy to receive PM if that minimises security risk. Cheers
