Red oil light was flashing on and off today before noise started. Now oil topped up oil light goes out when engine started Cogito ergo sum!

I cant believe that. It still starts and goes with no power loss. It can't be knackered. Cogito ergo sum!

Yup. Knackered. It was missing nearly 83-84% of its oil. It cant lubricate all the moving parts of an engine with only 1 litre of oil...
If you keep driving it, it will eventually put a rod through the block or snap the crank... My D3 Build Thread

But sometbing that is knackered to my mind cannot work but it does work so it must be able to be fixed and cannot be knackered. Cogito ergo sum!

And I'm not driving it. Nor have I been since it got home earlier. Just saying that it drove the 10 miles home after the noise started and after the oil had been topped up. Cogito ergo sum!

Kind of begs the question, isn’t the oil warning light supposed to come on before it drops so low that the engine breaks?
Is that fit for purpose ???

Oil light only indicates oil pressure, not quantity of oil in the sump.

The oil pressure light has hardly changed since the car was invented. Yes it is pointless.
Some cars do have level indicators and warnings, but still quite rare.
Renault are good at it.

If it isn’t driven any more then isn’t there a chance it can be fixed with new bearings / reground or new crank?
