Likewise Discomadness and thanks for taking the time. As it happens another mate of mine popped in earlier and he had a listen, without telling him what you said he also indicated at the crank and said he couldn't hear any knocking from underneath.
So still a very costly affair I imagine but perhaps a whole lot more promising than first thought.Cogito ergo sum!

Keep listening carefully over next few runs. The engine has potentially been run for 10 miles with about two coke cans of oil (0.7litres).
That may have had a detrimental effect on other areas, so would be good to catch them before anything serious happens.2011 MY D4 HSE

Abermarc, pleasure to meet you this morning ! Cracking looking disco, very envious of the roof rack ! I can confirm guys that the bottom end isn’t knocking, the noise is high up, brake servo side, possibly related to cam chain/tensioner.

I seem to remember a thread from somewhere, think the poster came from South America, where the concern was a snapped crankshaft. Again my recollection was that the engine would either turn or start and sound rubbish.
Turned out it was one of the two cam timing chains and luckily the engine appeared alright after the issue was fixed.
Had a look, but can’t find the thread. Anyone else remember?

I don't suppose the turbo could make a knocking sound, don't they like lots of oil.

‘Twas definately high up on the drivers side. Marc if you don’t have any joy with your mate (garage) if you want to bring it to me I can delve a bit deeper and if it means an engine swap then I’m sure we can help. Jarrod

The components that are under most pressure on a engine are the camshaft to cam followers, they are also at the top of the engine and are the first components to fail through lack of oil or contaminated oil, lack of lubricant puts a massive overload on the cam shaft drive components, a snapped cam shaft drive chain is equivalent or worse than a snapped timing belt, at least when a belt gives up the engine stops, with a chain it is possible for one side of the engine to keep running and totally wreck it.
Keep running the engine at your peril, cost of a new engine fitted by main dealer in excess of £22,000. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The problem is that you go and spend a load of money to get something in the top end fixed, but because the engine has been starved of oil, something else will break 10 days later.
I guess it is a risk you will have to take.
If you could sort the top end yourself, without labour costs, that would be a sensible way to go

Somewhat off-topic but loosely related
See threads about taking engines from Jags.
Anything about taking them from Citroen’s?
