Low Range Grinding?

Finally thought I out to try my new Disco (58 plate SE Auto) out on little bit of off-road, (make it look like it's not just driven on tarmac).
Being in the Fen there's plenty of nice green lanes to pootle down. Stopped selected pothole setting, selected Low range ( with foot on brake). Suspension set to high. After about 3 - 5 mins, I got a a slight grinding noise, which i could feel through the accelerator peddle, and the vehicle seemed to pull back. This was on a relatively even stretch of track and not whilst going through a puddle, and definatly not chance of grounding. It repeated this probably 3 /4 times in 15 minutes. Once back on tarmac and back to normal height and Highway range, it doesnt do it. 2 days later I took a friend down the same track, same settings, it did it again but not as many times. We got out just after it did it to see if we could see anything fowling, but nothing apparant. Any thoughts on what might be causing this before I take to a dealer?

I assume you didn't have hill descent control on by accident

Sounds like HDC (hill descent control) kicking in which is perfectly normal. Try shutting it off.

I think HDC was on, so that explains, but why does HDC cause this, just so I understand

It's basically the opposite of ABS, it's applying the brakes to slow you down, why it's so noisy I'm not sure, let's you know it's working though Thumbs Up

Hi another novice here, had exactly the same symptoms a couple of weeks ago. only had the car a few days so was still working out what all the buttons do... SWMBO read the manual and it was def the HDC. Was out again last weekend it was much reduced without HDC. Still had some grinding when the wheels slipping assume this was the ABS kicking in to stop individual wheels slipping?

Yup sounds very much like the HDC was kicking in.
FYI there is not a "Pothole " setting!
They are
1, Grass, Gravel, Snow ( often referred to as GGS on here )
2, Mud and Ruts
3, Sand
4, Rock Crawl

All settings affect the gear selection and response, diff locking action, suspension reaction, and power delivery.
If you select a "special program" when in Low Range, the suspension will automatically raise to off road height (air suspension ) unless a trailer is connected ( with lights fitted ) and HDC will be activated except in the "Sand" mode.
You will see a green symbol on the dash of a car going downhill. It can be manually switched off by pressing the yellow button by the gear lever with the red symbol of a car descending a hill. If you are a novice off road driver, I would suggest you keep the HDC on.

As you are driving along using the throttle, you are increasing the target speed for the HDC. As soon as you lift off the throttle, the HDC is slowing the car back down to the default target speed for the gear selected. Which is probably the noise you heard.
When descending a hill, the target speed can be raised and lowered with the cruise control buttons if fitted.

Hope this goes some way towards explaining the noises you heard, and if you can now duplicate them having this information, it should help allay your fears that something is about to drop off....................

Easy way to test is try a stretch with HDC on and then off (big yellow button). HDC will not kick in if you have your foot on the accelerator though, so you need to lift off.

As ^ee said...HDC does work with your foot on the throttle pedal. By using the throttle with HDC engaged what you are actually doing is increasing (or decreasing) the speed at which HDC kicks in. If you gently feather the throttle you can carefully control the speed of descent. + and - on cruise controller is another (less refined) method of achieving the same.

If you are going down a steep / slippery gradient then using the throttle carefully to control HDC will help to soften the bite of HDC (which can be quite harsh). Failure to do this can result in HDC acting too aggressively and this may result in loss of traction.

It also works in neutral and reverse 8) The latter is quite useful in a failed hill climb - gives you a bit of a chance to knock it into reverse and power down the slope safely....which is why it can be a good idea to leave HDC on on a steep climb....and probably why it is a BIG YELLOW button Whistle

HDC is fantastic on failed climbs. I can vouch for that, especially on very icy steep lanes. Low range and HDC in reverse is brilliant.

I have heard (and it may just be bulls**t....) but the HDC noise was intentionally 'put in' to alert people it was on and working.

I've also been told this doesn't apply to the D4 and the noise has been removed.

Any one confirm or deny this?
