Low range in D4 vs Low range in Land Cruiser V8

Howdy folks,

Being a Land Cruiser 200 (TDV8) owner, I am curious to know what the low range gearing on the Toyota is like compared to the Discovery 4.

Before you all shoot me, I am still a Land Rover owner too, with a Discovery II V8 auto which I've had for more than 10 years now.

I would like to know what the speedometer says in km/hr when a D4 is in Low 1st gear and the TDV6 is spinning at 2500 rpm exactly.

Can anyone help me with this experiment?

I need to test this out on my LC200 as well, and report back. TIA!

Ah Lawrance, you ended up getting the L/C!
I remember you where shopping around for a TDV6 just after I got mine.
Have you had any oil usage problems with the L/C?

BTW I guess you want the speed reading while the car is on flat ground or otherwise unless you are using the same hill readings will be different.

Just been and done this in my MY10 3.0 TDV6 and the speedo read a steady 6mph!

To Amazing, somehow, maths was not one of my strong points at school, I'm afraid. Embarassed However I do know how to read a dial with a needle pointing at a number! Razz

To Skep, thanks for the info. I've got a metric brain so I have to convert MPH to KM/hr. 6 MPH = 9.66 KM/Hr. I'm off to check out the LC200 and will report back. Stay tuned! Thumbs Up

To Rich, yes, I ended up getting the big T after agonising for a long time between a D3/D4 and a Land Cruiser 200 Series. In the end, the 17" wheels on the Toyota and the very simple tow bar arrangement and larger fuel tank won the argument for me, but let's not start that debate on this thread coz it has already been discussed in another thread.... Oil consumption? Yes, it's there, but apparently all new engines tend to use oil for a bit and then the consumption settles down. Other than that, there has been zero product quality issues, so I'm happy so far.

Finally managed to perform the test - low range 1st in LC200 TDV8 @ 2500 RPM = 10 km/hr according to the speedo.

Thanks for the info sharing, Skep!

I was curious to know if the LC200 had a good low 1st gear like the excellent gearing on the D4.

The D4 has a more useable spread of ratios because the LC200's top gear does not engage normally until about 110 km/hr.

I wouldn't trust speedos at that low a speed.

From the data, for low-range 1st the LC200 is 37.8:1, the D4 is 43.3:1
