LR3 4.0L Ford V6 - Replace Engine Project

Hi all, have heard and read a lot of ideas about replacing the Ford manufactured "Cologne" 4.0L SOHC in the LR3 (2005-2009) with another engine from a Ford branded 4x4 vehicle, so am going to give it go. I have a 2007 LR3 with the dreaded rear timing chain disease, where the pistons and valves have kissed therefore killing the Land Rover engine. Have purchased a 2008 Ford Ranger VIN "E" engine (with balance shaft) from an auto recycler here and am going to start stripping it down tomorrow, documenting my progress here and hopefully throwing in a few photos. I am guessing that the project will not go quietly into the night... unless I get really lucky...

So I take it that the basic engines are the same - so all your current sensors and ancillaries will just bolt up to the new engine?

Well, "everyone" says they are, but I can't find a single soul who has actually done it. We will all find out together, I am interested to find out because I may want to add some horsepower enhancing parts, which are easily available for the Ford here in Canada...

We do the same here with the 2.7 TDV6 - the TDV6 is also fitted to the Australian designed and build Ford Territory - basic engine is the same but different sensors, sump and ancillaries but basic engine is the same - all transfer across and the Ford engine works well without the crank failures and oil pump issues of the LR engine.

so is that a pointer to how/why the LR variant may be failing ?

which sensors are different ?

No idea but the Territory engine are the last of the 2.7s so maybe PSA/Ford had fixed them by then - sensors need to be compatible with the ECU so sensors that are compatible with the LR ECU need to used so you transfer them across from the old dead engine.

Well that is interesting that you in Australia have found an engine solution, I am certainly going to give the Ford V6 a try, seems like it should work, attached are some photos of the 2008 Ranger 4x4 engine... Top and bottom photos are after removing ancillary stuff and bottom shows rear timing chain assembly...

Just finished replacing the oil (5W-30 Synthetic), the hydraulic timing chain tensioners (2) and spun up the engine to about 2000 rpm, timing chains are tight as a drum, will conduct further experiments next Tuesday...

Sorry to be the only one replying on a thread I started, but does anyone know what replacement oil for the ZF-6HP26A transmission is acceptable other than the horrendously expensive "ZF Lifeguard Fluid 6" product? I'll be surprised if there is not a less expensive and better product, but since we will be removing the engine, at 260,000 Km the transmission fluid should also be addressed...

And the differentials, and the transfer case...

Fluid people consider equivalent seem to be at least Ravenol and Mannol. I’ve used BG 312E Universal ATF in mine. Most comments seem to concentrate on that it’s mad and the path is paved to hell since the dye is the wrong color. According to BG it meets (or exceeds) the spec, though. It’s now two years since and has done ~40 k km after the flush so I’m reasonably sure the transmission is ok. Whistle

As for the diffs and transfer case. Used Ravenol TF-0870 for the latter and a generic hypoid 75W-90 for the front and rear diffs. I don’t have a rear locking differential but if you do I think the oil is also different.

You could/should also probably change the coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid, etc. at the same time. For PSF I used CHF 11S. For coolant any OAT goes I think. Brake fluid is DOT4.
