I brought a 3.5ton boat out of south west Wales to Loch Lomond, the hills on M4 were a killer on fuel but full trip averaged 19mpg , normal use average 26 consisting of some motorway but mostly country roads William

Hi folks, I find my d3 excellent on fuel (towing or solo), I can fill up in Dudley west midlands and drive to a touring site at mevagissy ,Cornwall and still have 1/2 tank left. The trip has always been 249.8 miles but never 250!!, mine is a Manual admitted but I blanked the EGR valves and cleaned the MAP sensor and the difference is fantastic, I don't want to get in to a calculated figures battle but I am pleased with mine. Just to add our disco is full to the brim with boat engine, mountain bikes x3 and the kitchen sink but a drop of 2T oil and a regular service does the trick for me.

I've stopped being lightfooted, doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm always amazed hooking up the van only drops 1mpg, would have thought it'd be much more. Also my mpg has been better (2 or so) since getting the gearbox flushed.
Something to keep check of is the caravan brakes, couple of years ago after having our van serviced our mpg was atrocious, got to the central belt and all four wheels were roasting. Brakes had been adjusted far too close, mobile servicing guy came out and said it was quite a common occurrence. Continued the rest of the journey much easier (on the wallet).

I tow a twin axle at 1800kg and get 24. It never really changes but once got 26 from stansted to Folkestone. Calculated on the filling to brim. I generally tow at sixty and keep the speed constant. It's had a remap so more torque, which may help fuel consumption when towing.

D4 on HP Wranglers towing 1500kg average brim to brim is 22mpg - cruise control on motorways set to 57mph (satnav figure).
How some of you get 24mpg towing heavier vans is a mystery to me.MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

Sometimes it pays to change the cruising speed up or down to stay in the more economical gears. If you keep dropping out of 6th or 8th if a later one it can drink more juice.D4

Last years trip to France with tin tent (1500 miles) yielded around 19 mpg - going to clean my MAP today, hope will see some improvement.

In my 07 Disco 3 around 19-22mpg, towing twin axle Bailey Wyoming, never checked my Disco 4 but going to the CC site at Lower Wensleydale on Thursday so I will keep an eye on it!!!!!!

Hmmmm this thread makes me think theres something wrong with my Disco!
I drove to the Vendee last summer which was mostly all motorway with my 1600kg tintent on and only got 16mpg!!
Gonna go and clean the MAP sensor asap but my EGR valves are already blanked off.
Any suggestions of things to check. Just serviced all the brakes on truck and caravan so they're all fine.2004 Disco 3 TDV6 SE

I have run some tests, not very scientific as I only used the readout on the instrument panel but got the following.
1500 miles without caravan = 29.9 MPG
Then I reset the clock and drove 75miles = 29.7 MPG
Then reset the clock and drove the same 75 miles with caravan attached = 18.5 MPG
Reset clock again and drove 116 Miles = 29.4 MPG
Reset the clock once again and pulled caravan back 75 miles = 19.1 MPG
Reset yet again and after 230 miles = 29.7MPG
Over here in Ireland max tow speed is 49.7MPH (80KPH) so I never really get into 6th gear.Dale

Hi all,
Returned from my holiday to the Dales with my twin axle tin tent following the D4, total consumption was 27.01mpg over 700 miles. 500 miles was towing so well happy with that.

Don't forget you can knock from 2 to 5mpg off any numbers from the trip comp. Mine's been consistently showing 3mpg over on the trip vs reality, though it can vary. The trip comp is LR's way of making you feel green.

I have been towing a big plant trailer all week and the average fuel consumption has dropped from 36 a few weeks ago to 20 so take another 4 miles per gallon off because the trip computer has been set optomistic so you buy another. And bingo you have 16 mpg which is about right for 200 hp engine pulling around 6000kg aboutD4

My caravan is relatively light at around 1300kg loaded; I don't like to hang around whether towing or solo, usually tow at an indicated 62-63 mph assuming conditions are good and my regular solo commute is all B roads which does nothing for economy. Typically, real world figures for me are around 26 solo and 20 with the van on for the D4 and the D3 (manual) was interestingly more economical solo at 28 but less economical with the same van (19).
I've stopped worrying about fuel economy figures as I only do about 10k miles a year; what I will spend on maintenance, repairs and buying stuff that I might or might not need for it will always come to more than the difference a few mpg makes - so why worry.
The long and the short of it is that if you are worried about whether you can afford to run a D3 because it uses a lot of fuel, I'd be questioning if I could actually afford the full set of maintenance and running costs that comes with a D3/4 once they start to get a older and the miles pile up.
