MACS and PC's
.... I was having a quiet moment in PCWorld this afternoon when my phone rang. Must have been on auto-pilot when talking because when I ended the call I found I had strayed into that dark corner in the shop where the MAC stuff lives.
And in the software section I saw products from Norton and Mcafee , ( and at more then twice the price of PC versions )
So question - Have the bad guys now got into bad stuff with MACS ????

No not really but it's possible. Simple reason why Macs don't get targeted is that less than 10% of computers are Macs so why waste time on 10% when the same time could be spent on hitting 90% of the market.Loving the power of the TDV8!

mac OS X is also built on the old Unix kernel which is inherently more secure and robust than Windows. Most mac owners don't run any sort of anti-virus and don't need to. You'd have to be a real moron to run a program and enter the system password to install it without knowing - and less mac users are morons !!!

I don't think you are being advised not to buy a MAC 8) simply not to buy it from PC WORLD, buy from an apple retailer/store or online direct from Apple UK
I have PC's and a MAC, depends what i'm doing as to which one i use! I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

This is not new but deserves to be aired again. For the record i think both systems have their place and excel in different areas, just generating discussion

At COMDEX Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving twenty-five dollar cars that got 1000 miles to the gallon."
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating (by Mr. Welch himself):
If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:
* For no reason whatsoever your car would crash twice a day.
* Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would have to buy a new car.
* Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive on.
* Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn, would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
* Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but it would only run on five percent of the roads.
* The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single "general car default" warning light.
* New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.
* The airbag system would say "Are you sure?" before going off.
* Occasionally for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lift the door handle, turn the key, and grab hold of the radio antenna.
* GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of Rand McNally road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even though they neither need them nor want them. Attempting to delete this option would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50% or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.
* Everytime GM introduced a new model car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as in the old car.
* You'd press the "start" button to shut off the engine.

................. I feel like Apple is not just selling computers, they're selling a way of life, and I'm not ready to be that heavily invested in a product. ......

sjr.
I use both, MAC for everything apart from excel, seems to work better on PC.
Have never put any anti virus software on my macs (have 4 in the house) but the PC has got everything on it..
And you're right, they are selling a way of life, one that means you don't have to press "start" to switch it off...

osx is based on BSD 5.x distro and with properly modified IPFW script it would be hard nut to crack, not saying imposible but not practical at all as it would require sh...t loads of time
properly configd osx is good as any other true UNIX out there
So how do you know they haven't got a virus and are happily propagating it to everything they can? Mac virus do exist, though admittedly they're not very common, and probably rely on the fact that they can propagate freely as very few mac users think they can get them. Same goes for most unix/linux based systems
I'm not saying that from a pro-PC perspective (I use winderz and various flavours of unix/linux myself), just surprises me the amount of users that think they're 'invulnerable' The End
